Kominka (traditional Japanese houses) represent a rich repository of the wisdom and techniques of traditional craftsmen and of time-honored Japanese culture. Refurbished kominka houses are now attracting a lot of interest because of their relaxing atmosphere. They amaze and delight visitors with various delicacies, and with their quaint atmosphere reminiscent of the “good old days.” In the ancient capital city of Kamakura, you can also find stylish kominka cafés and restaurants!

1. Ideal for the macrobiotics-conscious woman of today! Taisho-period retro-taste “Grain-and-Vegetable Café Sorafune” in Omachi district embodies Taisho-era retro style
The stone pavement leading through the wicket door magically takes you into another world. Enveloped in a mysterious feeling, as if you had been transported back in time to the Taisho era (the 1920s). A quaint kominka suddenly appears before you—this is the Grain-and-Vegetable Café Sorafune. The antiquated well, a retro-style bicycle … every artifact enhances the café’s unique sense of style.
We recommend that you try “Daizu Tampaku no Karaage Teishoku” (deep-fried soybean protein set menu). The set menu includes: deep-fried soybean protein, brown rice, red miso soup, salad, pickled vegetables, and a side dish (simmered soybean with natural sweetness). Soybean protein is full of dietary fiber and is isoflavone cholesterol-free, making it good for the skin as well.

2. Experience everyday life in Kamakura at yoridocoro in Inamuragasaki
This kominka café was a tailor’s shop in the Taisho era. When renovating the building, the owners left the fittings of the window frames, the closets, the marks on columns, etc. just as they were, to evoke a sense of the building’s history.
The café is open from early in the morning. Our recommended morning menu item is “Himono Teishoku” (a Japanese-style set meal using dried fish). The café owner grew up in a dried fish store, and as you might expect the dried fish served in the café is delicious!

3. Enjoy authentic Italian cuisine at Takeru Quindici, a secluded Italian restaurant in Kitakamakura
Near Kita-Kamakura Station, this Italian restaurant in a traditional kominka house stands quietly with a dignified presence next to Tokeiji. Isn’t it marvelous to be able to enjoy delicacies made using locally-sourced vegetables harvested that very morning and other fresh seasonal ingredients in an elegant atmosphere? The owner, who trained in a famous restaurant in Naples, serves you with authentic flavors.
Our recommendation is Napoli pizza baked in a firewood oven imported specially from Naples.
This authentic Margherita pizza baked by experts is too good to miss! -

4. Café Minka (Kitakamakura)—a secluded hideaway
Near Kita-Kamakura Station stands a beautiful tree-shaded café, Café Minka. Through the healing scents of green leaves at the entrance appears a fabulous structure refurbished from an old Japanese-style house of the early Showa era (late 1920s). The exquisite warm colors of wood envelop you.
A wonderful retro atmosphere fills the inside, with its antique-style interiors. Old books and eye-catching knick-knacks on the shelves reflect the excellent taste of the owner!
The home-made pudding is highly recommended. You’re sure to enjoy this simple yet delicious pudding with its rich bittersweet caramel flavor.
