The Best 4 Guest Houses in Kamakura

Kamakura is one of the ancient capitals in Japan, and is the closest to Tokyo, the present-day capital. If you would like to experience everyday life in Kamakura just like a local resident, then guesthouses are your best choice. Guesthouses have a lot to offer, including the pleasant interaction between guests and owners; if you stay in one, you’re sure to want to return in the future. In this section we introduce some of Kamakura’s best guesthouses.

    1. A traditional kominka house with a Japanese-style fireplace (irori) & a bar — the Kamakura Guesthouse offers everything you could possibly need

The building in which the Kamakura Guesthouse is located was formerly a Japanese-style restaurant. Renovated by the owner himself, it features a large traditional fireplace in the shared space.

The dormitory, which offers a spacious Japanese-style atmosphere, is 3,500yen per night per person. The craftsman-made Japanese soft bedding should ensure sound sleep.

A gate leads to the basement of the guesthouse where the Bar Little Planet is situated.
Drinks and snacks served in the bar can be taken out. Many guests take out dried fish to grill it at the guesthouse fireplace.

    2. Time passes slowly and relaxedly at the Kamejikan guesthouse

From Enoden Yuigahama Station, a 15-minute walk takes you to the Kamejikan guesthouse, located in a traditional kominka house. Situated in Zaimokuza, which was formerly a prosperous port town, staying at this guesthouse with two private rooms and a shared dormitory room is a nostalgic experience, just like visiting your grandma in the country.

A stay here costs from 9,000yen per room per night. The dormitory costs from 3,200yen per person per night.

The guesthouse runs the weekend-only Café Kamejikan. The café’s specialist is home cooking using locally-sourced fresh seasonal vegetables; the food is great to look at, and great to eat.
Café Kamejikan: Open from 12:00–16:30 (last orders) on weekends and public holidays

From Enoden Hase Station, a two-minute walk takes you to the Inn By The Sea Kamakura guesthouse. Yuigahama Beach is located right behind it! The friendly owners (a Japanese man and his Canadian wife) will give you a warm welcome.

The rooms, with tatami-mat floors, will ensure a relaxed stay; rooms cost from 6,000yen per night (including breakfast).

    4. IZA Kamakura Guesthouse & Bar—A place for travelers to meet

Housed in a stylish brick building, IZA Kamakura Guesthouse & Bar is just a two-minute walk from Enoden Hase Station. What distinguishes this guesthouse from other types of accommodation (for example in Komachi-dori Street or other parts of Kamakura) is its refined atmosphere and location in a quiet residential area. The brick building and the big “noren” curtain at the entrance make this guesthouse a local landmark!

Inside the guesthouse, on the left near the entrance, a stairwell creates a nice shared space with a relaxing atmosphere. In winter, the retro-style fireplace adds a romantic atmosphere to the space. There is also a bar counter behind it.

Staying at the dormitory costs from 3,500yen per night.
On the 1st floor there are two private rooms: a double and a twin (with bunk beds).
On the 2nd floor there are three rooms: a dormitory for women only, one for men and women (both equipped with three three-tier bunk beds respectively), and a room for four persons.

You can enjoy your complimentary breakfast while listening to the sound of the waves!

For 1,000yen, you can rent a bicycle and travel around the area more conveniently. It takes about 30 minutes to reach Enoshima Island from the guesthouse.
