    Smart Exchange are exchange machines that can be found throughout Shinjuku, with the advantage being that you can change money even at midnight when many money exchange offices are closed.

    There’s a Smart Exchange machine at the BICQLO BicCamera Shinjuku East Store. Simply take the underpass and the A5 exit, which leads to the entrance of the store. Or you can go from the entrance on the first floor, then you can find the machine immediately after entering the ground entrance.

    World Currency Shop is a specialist foreign currency exchange store and one of the largest money exchange networks in Japan. They always have 21 different currencies stocked at their numerous locations in Shinjuku. These include:

    Galireo Currency Exchange has a counter that’s just a two-minute walk from the JR Shinjuku Station’s East Exit and easily accessed from the Shinjuku-sanchome Station by the underpass. Simply go down the stairs at the B10 Exit and walk straight ahead. You’ll see it on the right-hand side.

    They also have a foreign currency exchange machine (for purchasing yen only) on the right side of the store that can be used between 6 am and 11 pm, making it a great option if you need to exchange money early in the morning or late at night.

  • J-Market

    J-Market has four stores around Shinjuku that handle foreign currency exchange, as well as selling train tickets for the Yamanote Line and Shinkansen bullet trains. They’re open longer hours than most banks and exchange a total of 13 currencies, including US Dollars, Euros, British Pounds and Australian Dollars. You can also exchange Chinese Yuan, Korean Won, Hong Kong Dollar and Thai Baht, as well as Canadian Dollars, Swiss Francs, Taiwan Dollars, New Zealand Dollars and Singapore Dollars.

    This outlet is located on the way to Galireo Currency Exchange (mentioned above). It’s inside a pink shop that’s situated behind the stairs, just before you descend at Exit B10.

    Simply walk along Meiji Street keeping the Isetan Shinjuku store on your left and LOUIS VUITTON to the right and you’ll eventually see Marui Men at the intersection with Yasukuni Street. Diagonally to your left will be a building with a Mine Drug on the 1st floor. Take the elevator that’s located adjacent to Mine Drug up to the 3rd floor and you’ll find the TOUREX Shinjuku.

    If you’re changing an obscure currency, then Exchangers is a good place to head as they handle more than 150 different currencies (the largest number in Japan) and they’re known for offering very good rates. For currency exchanges of less than two million yen, they don’t require you to show ID, so you don’t have to carry your passport with you.

    The Exchangers Shinjuku Kabukicho store is situated in the Shinjuku NOA Building along Yasukuni Street, between the Shinjuku ward office building and the SHIDAX karaoke shop. Keep an eye out for the Mr Donuts shop and you’ll find it! Aside from their currency exchange service, there are also gashapon toy vending machines and a stationery department where you can pick up supplies.

    Although this branch of Samurai Exchange is currently closed, it’s planned to open again soon in Shinjuku’s Golden-gai district. Their friendly staff can also assist with tourist information and sightseeing recommendations in and around the Tokyo area.

    The Samurai Exchange Shinjuku Golden-gai Shop is just a short walk from the Exchangers branch listed above. Simply turn left at the traffic lights where Mr Donuts is and you will see the Shinjuku ward office on your left. At the corner of the road, you’ll see the Samurai Exchange just there.

    Omotenashi Money Exchange is a convenient option if you’re using the Seibu Shinjuku Station as it’s located on the 5th floor of a building that’s directly in front of the North Exit. They offer competitive rates for US Dollars, Euros, Chinese, Korean Won and British Pounds, as well as Australian Dollars, Taiwan Dollars, Hong Kong Dollars, Canadian Dollars, Singapore Dollars and Philippine Pesos.


    Aside from their currency exchange services, they also have a Wi-Fi rental service, which costs 486 yen for up to 12 hours. There’s a maximum capacity of 10GB and it can only be used within Japan.

    Sakura Exchange is another currency exchange operator with a branch in Kabukicho that’s renowned for its excellent rates. When selling your own foreign currency, you need a copy of your ID and they are open for extended hours when compared to banks and some other currency exchange counters.

    To reach the Sakura Exchange Kabukicho store, simply leave JR Shinjuku Station from the East Exit and walk towards Kabukicho. Before you reach the TOHO Cinemas, turn left and continue straight ahead until you see Sakura Exchange on your right.
