How to Get Around Tokyo on a Bicycle
  • A common sight in Tokyo is a pack of commuters on large cruisers with children in tow. These so called mamacharis, or mother bicycles, are such a mainstay in Tokyo that it has become the second most common form of transportation, next to the train. However, for the tourist or cash strapped Tokyoite, it can be difficult to purchase an expensive bicycle. Recently, Tokyo has picked up on the trend of community bicycle sharing. This environmentally friendly transportation is easy to use and very affordable for a day out.

One of the easiest bicycle rental programs is Chiyocle. This “community cycle” program is available 24 hours everyday all over Tokyo, Kawasaki to Shinjuku. English menus are readily available at every kiosk.

Registration can be done online. Just fill out information with a credit card number and that’s it! There are three payment options: one trip membership, monthly membership and a one day pass. At 1,500 yen per day, the one day pass is the best option for long cycling trips. The pass lasts until 11:59 PM on the day of purchase.

The one trip membership is available 24 hours and is 150 yen for the first 30 minutes with an additional 100 yen for every half hour. The monthly membership is best for those staying long term in Tokyo. It is also available 24 hours and is a flat 2,000 yen per month.

There are two ways to register: using a phone number or IC card. The phone number option uses an online system on a smartphone where riders create a login and password. Then the rider chooses a docking port and their bicycle of choice. They will then receive a passcode, which they will use to unlock their chosen bicycle.

The IC card replaces registration and makes the job much easier. Simply register your IC card with a login and password online. Then at the docking port just tap your IC card and passcode to unlock your chosen bicycle.

To return the bicycle, just park the bike at the designated return spot and enter the bicycle number. It’s simple and easy and a great way to ride around Tokyo without the commitment of purchasing a real cruiser.

    Rules and Regulations

Like all major cities, there is a divide between cyclists and drivers and cyclists and pedestrians. Cars drive on the left side of the road so cyclists must follow the same rule. Be sure to stay in the bike line and take care in unprotected turn zones. If cycling at night it is the law to have both a front and rear end light. In some cases, bicycles are not allowed on the roads but share the sidewalk with pedestrians. There will be a lane for bicycles but remember that pedestrians have the right of way in Japan. It is common to have a bell on the bicycle to warn unassuming walkers. Helmets are highly encouraged but only a rule for children under the age of 13.

For foreign visitors please remember to carry your passport. It is common to get stopped by the police on a bicycle and it is necessary to always have your passport on hand.

    Don’t forget to park!

Unlike most parts of the world, it is necessary to pay for bicycle parking in Tokyo. It is not just illegal to leave a bicycle sitting outside, there is a high likelihood it might get stolen or taken by the police. Avoid a lost bicycle by using the many parking lots around Tokyo. Bicycle parking is relatively cheap, only about 100 yen for the whole day, depending on the area. Simply park the bike into an open parking spot and when ready to pick it up, enter the parking spot number into the ticket machine, and pay the fee. Normally, cyclists pay the fee once they return to their bicycle.
