How to get to Narita Airport

After some time in Japan you likely have a grip on transportation, but getting back to the airport to head home should be a painless last-step. Narita isn't exactly down the street, so it's best to know in advance how you're returning.

As you might expect, Japanese airports are fast and efficient for processing travelers once you arrive, and you won’t likely find long lines holding you back. If you arrive two hours before your flight you'll still have time to relax a bit inside the gates. Getting there even earlier won't hurt either of course.

Depending on where you are, most modes of transport to the airport will take 60~90 minutes, or even as little as 36 minutes if you're staying in Nippori or Ueno.

Whether to take a train or a bus entirely depends on where you're located. If you're tired, have a lot of luggage, or simply don't feel like bringing everything through a train station your easiest bet could be finding a nearby Airport Limousine Bus pickup spot, possibly even right at your hotel. Use their website to find the spot, and be sure to make a reservation, but don’t be late! The bus will bring you directly in front of the departure terminal, so it's hassle-free.

If the train makes more sense, it's best to use the transit search function in the NAVITIME for Japan Travel app to tell you which one will get you there faster. Most likely you will take the Keisei Skyliner, Keisei Access Express, or the Narita Express trains. These will get you to Narita on predictable timing, but also require more walking through the airport to get to the departure terminal.

-Buy in advance: If you know how and when you want to go, go ahead and purchase your train tickets the day before you leave. You'll be happy to have that out of the way.
'-If you don't buy in advance and enter the train station gates with an e-money card, you also need to purchase reserved seats for the Skyliner and Narita Express trains on top of the standard fare. This can be confusing, especially at Tokyo Station where the Narita Express ticket machine inside the gates is difficult to find!
'-Do you know your terminal? Narita has three international terminals, so please check in advance. Once you're inside the train there isn't much signage helping you decide, but if you make a mistake it just means a bit more walking for you.

-Did you purchase an e-money card in the Tokyo area during your trip? If so, you can get a refund at the train station office in the airport before you head off.
'-Don't want to deal with luggage? You can have it sent to the airport using a service like Kuroneko Yamato for a reasonable cost
'-If you want snacks for your trip, purchase them before you go through security as there aren't many shops inside with a wide selection.
