Ueno Park Overview
Ueno is one of the major hubs in northeastern Tokyo, and an important waypoint for travelers to and from Narita airport. However, just a few minutes from the bustling station you will find Ueno Park, one of Tokyo’s finest oases of greenery and nature.

This part of town has had a turbulent history. The area that currently is Ueno Park used to belong to one of the wealthiest families in Tokyo during the Edo Era. Back then, it was a part of Kaneiji Temple, built to protect the Edo Castle from evil spirits. However, most of the temple buildings were destroyed during the Boshin War in 1868, and since then, the area has belonged to the city of Tokyo.

In 1873, just one year after the foundation of Yellowstone, the first national park in the world, Japanese authorities decided that the Tokyoites too deserved a major recreational park, and later that year the construction of Ueno Park got started.

The shrines and temples
Ueno Park is full of temples and shrines. Some of them very impressive. For example the golden Tosho-gu Shrine, built in 1616 and dedicated to the spirit of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Another one is the Kaneiji temple that was destroyed during the Boshin War, but has since been rebuilt. Currently it is located inside Ueno Zoo, with its most striking feature being the five-story pagoda standing next to the main temple building. There is also the Hanazono Inari Shrine, famous for the dozens of torii gates that lead you to the entrance. The Kiyomizu Kannon Temple, dedicated to the goddess of conception, as well as the charming temple hall Bentendo, on an island in the Shinobazu pond, are also what we would consider must sees. Most of the shrines and temples are free to visit and open until 4pm or 5pm every day.

Ueno Daibutsu and Pagoda
The Ueno Daibutsu was a giant Buddha statue first built in 1631, which has subsequently been destroyed several times by fires and earthquakes. Most recently was in 1923, when the head fell off during the great Kanto Earthquake. In 1972, the face was restored and put on display next to the pagoda at Daibutsuyama, or the great Buddha Hill, the location of the former statue.

Ueno Zoo
Opening back in 1882, Ueno Zoo is the oldest Zoo in Japan. The zoo is currently home to more than 460 different species such as tigers, sea lions and the two giant pandas Lili and Shinshin. The zoo is divided into two parts, connected by a cute monorail train. Ueno zoo is open from 9:30 to 5pm every day except on Mondays. Admission is 600 Yen.

Shinobazu Pond
This natural pond located in the southern part of Ueno Park is famous for the lotuses that blanket a large part of it. Shinobazu Pond also hosts a rich population of birds and fish. The western part of the pond offers rental boats and is a popular spot for couples on a date. The area around the pond provides a good location to catch the last rays of light before sunset. Shinobazu Pond has a long history, appearing on woodblock prints several hundred years old.

Tokyo Bunka Kaikan
Tokyo Bunka Kaikan is one of the biggest venues in Tokyo for concerts, opera and ballet. The venue opened in 1961 and is highly praised for its acoustics, said to be among the best in the world. The main hall can accommodate more than 2300 visitors. Bunka Kaikan also houses one of the few dedicated music libraries in Japan, available for the public to enjoy free of charge.
