Ueno's Underground Asian Market
Step down into the basement of the Ameyoko Center Building and you could be forgiven for thinking you have been suddenly transported to somewhere in Southeast Asia. In this vibrant market, you will find plenty of foodstuffs that you most certainly won’t be able to get at your local supermarket. How about some live turtles, chicken feet in bulk, whole pig heads or cow lung? If you need something to spice up your Sunday dinner, this food market is difficult to beat.

There’s also some shops specializing in spices, hot sauces with funky labels and more types of noodles that we ever knew existed. Most of your needs for exotic fruits can most likely be satisfied down here too, often at prices considerably lower than the major supermarket chains. In fact, many local restaurant owners come here to stock up on their supplies.

In total, around a dozen different shops are located down here. Most of the staff seem to have their roots in other Asian countries, and it’s more likely to hear customers haggle with them in Vietnamese, Thai or Chinese than Japanese. The smells here also contribute to the feeling of being somewhere else rather than in the middle of the capital of Japan.
