  • Dogo Onsen
    Ehime Matsuyama-shi Dogoyunomachi
    A hot spring area famously known as one of Japan’s “Three Ancient Springs.” Boasting an extremely long history, the area is mentioned in the “Nihon shoki,” an ancient historical chronical compiled in the distant Nara period. It is also said that Prince Shotoku and numerous writers and artists such as Natsume Soseki and Masaoka Shiki bathed in its curative waters. In the center of the area’s hot spring district stands the Dogo Onsen Honkan, a public bathhouse whose building is over 120 years old and which continues to serve large numbers of customers. The waters of the alkaline simple spring are said to promote recovery from fatigue and alleviate nerve pain and joint pain. Some of the many nearby sightseeing destinations include Isanawa Shrine, the Shiki Memorial Museum, and the Dogo Haikara-dori Street shopping district, and visitors can enjoy exploring the area’s history in addition to therapeutic hot spring bathing.

    A hot spring hotel situated along the Niyodo River, Japan's cleanest river. The hotel's hot spring is a natural alkaline simple sulfur cold mineral spring.     This hot spring village, adjoining Kotohira-gu Shrine in Kagawa Prefecture, encompasses three source springs-a sodium calcium chloride spring, a salt bicarbonate earth spring, and a simple mildly radioactive cold mineral spring (hypotonic mildly alkaline cold mineral spring). The hot springs here were discovered in 1997 and now visitors can worship at the shrine and enjoy hot spring bathing all in one place. Since ancient times, Kotohira-gu Shrine has possessed many aspects, serving as a guardian of the sea, bountiful harvests, huge fish hauls, and prosperity in business, attracting large numbers of worshippers from all over the country. The shrine grounds also encompass many historic sites and the shrine itself possesses many cultural properties. In addition, the grounds are known for their seasonal flowers and beautiful fall foliage, and they constantly bustle with large numbers of visitors. There are also many activities offered here to ensure visitors enjoy a fulfilling visit, including handmade Sanuki udon noodle classes and wasanbon fine-grained Japanese sugar making classes.

    A hot spring owned and operated by the Hotel Iyaonsen located in the Iya Valley, considered one of Japan's three most secluded locations. The hotel commands views of beautiful Iya and visitors can take in the stunning, steep valley and the Iyagawa River running through it. The waters of the alkaline simple sulfate spring have a high pH level and are said to treat such ailments as nerve pain, rheumatism, wounds, and women's diseases, in addition to promoting beauty and recovery from fatigue.     The history of this hot spring resort, located in Tokushima Prefecture's Myozai District, dates back to 1868. Surrounded by natural beauty and a perfect place to rest and recuperate, records say that a salt water bathing hut stood here in the Edo period. The waters of the resort's sodium chloride, hydrogen carbonate spring (sodium bicarbonate-containing salt spring) are said to be effective for general indication and treat such ailments as cuts, peripheral circulatory failure, sensitivity to cold, depression, and abnormally dry skin. They also have a strong warming effect which prevents post-bath chills and excellent moisture retention effect. The resort has lodging facilities, making it a great base from which to explore the area; the resort's bathing facilities are also open to non-guests. The resort is also located between the Shosan-ji Temple and the Dainichi-ji Temple, the 12th and 13th stations along the Shikoku Pilgrimage which follows sacred sites connected to the great monk Kobo Daishi.     This natural hot spring, located in Tosa City, Kochi Prefecture, is owned and operated by the Sanyo-so inn. The dark brown waters of the sodium calcium chloride spring, also known as the Ogon no Yu (Golden Hot Spring), are said to treat such ailments as nerve pain, muscle soreness, fatigue, women's diseases, sensitivity to cold, skin diseases, and hemorrhoids. The inn is located in a vast, open area with a panoramic view of the ocean off Tosa; a popular base for whale watching and local pilgrimages, the quality waters of the inn's baths, containing an abundance of natural, healing substances, soothe the bodies of weary travelers. The inn's hot spring bathing facilities are open to non-guests, as well, and there is also a footbath right next to the entrance free for anyone to use. The footbath also has a view of the sea, so those journeying through the area should be sure to stop by.
