  • Maruseppu Onsen

    A hot spring resort located in Maruseppu, Engaru Town to the northwest of Kitami City. Situated in a forest area 300 meters above sea level, there are no convenience stores or souvenir shops nearby. The waters of the area's alkaline simple spring are said to treat such ailments as nerve pain, muscle soreness, joint pain, frozen shoulders, motor paralysis, joint stiffness, bruises, sprains, fatigue, chronic digestive diseases, hemorrhoids, and sensitivity to cold. Visitors can experience the area's natural wonder through such destinations as the Taihei Highland, formed long ago by pyroclastic flow from an ancient volcanic eruption; and the Maruseppu Insectarium, located inside the Ikoi no Mori forest park. Afterword, there's nothing better than taking a relaxing hot spring soak while gazing at a star-filled sky.

  • Naganuma Onsen
    Hokkaido Yubari-gun Naganumacho Higashi 6-sen Kita 4
    A popular hot spring inn located just a one hour drive from Sapporo inside a lush public park, here visitors can enjoy both convenience and the natural beauty of Hokkaido. The inn's spring generates some of the greatest volumes of piping hot water of any in Hokkaido; its baths are constantly replenished kakenagashi style from the spring without the use of any additional waters or heating. The waters of the inn's iodine-containing highly saline sodium chloride spring are said to treat a variety of ailments, including nerve pain, muscle soreness, joint pain, frozen shoulders, motor paralysis, joint stiffness, bruises, sprains, and chronic digestive diseases.   • Fukenoyu Onsen
    Akita Kazuno-shi
    This secluded hot spring inn, located in the Hachimantai designated area of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, owns and operates the oldest hot springs in Hachimantai. The waters of the inn's hot springs have been welling forth from the ground for 300 years. Situated amidst virgin beech forest 1,100 meters above sea level, visitors can be soothed by both verdure and water. Three source springs of differing qualities are found on the inn's grounds, and their turbid hot spring waters are used to constantly refill tubs kakenagashi style. These waters of these simple and mildly acidic springs warm both body and soul and are said to aid post-illness recovery as well as treat such ailments as nerve pain, rheumatism, infertility women's diseases, hernias, fatigue, gastrointestinal disorders, skin diseases, and atopy. The inn has six different types of baths but its outdoor baths are its most famous. These outdoor baths dot an area from which piping hot steam emerges from the ground, and bathers can feel at one with the wide open natural world around them.

    The collective term for the seven hot spring districts which dot the region at the foot of Mt. Nyutouzan straddling Akita Prefecture and Iwate Prefecture, the area has also been designated a National Hot Spring Health Resorts. This scenic hot spring region, rich in natural beauty, is surrounded by Mt. Akita-Komagatake and other revered mountains and is also a popular base for mountain climbing activities. Over 10 different types of source springs with differing qualities are found here, and visitors can enjoy a variety of hot spring waters depending on the location. There is a pass sold which provides access to seven hot spring bathhouses and tour busses also operate in the area where visit different hot springs, attracting large numbers of hot spring lovers.

  • Take Onsen
    Fukushima Nihonmatsu-shi Take Onsen 1-16
    A hot spring district sprawling at the foot of 1,700 meter tall Mt. Adatara in Bandai-Asahi National Park. The area's acidic springs, a type found almost nowhere else in the country, are said to have been discovered by the shogun Sakanoue no Tamuramaro during his eastern expedition. The tasteless, odorless waters of the area's springs have a pH of 2.48 and are said to ease nerve pain, help heal motor paralysis, aid recovery from fatigue, and promote health. Long ago, during a time when there were no antibiotics, this ancient hot spring district provided an invaluable method of treatment for many diseases. In a Japan Hot Spring Association survey, this hot spring destination was selected as having the best natural beauty in the country and was also awarded the Fourth Superior Sight Seeing Area Cultivation Award by the Japan Travel and Tourism Association. The area also conducts fun health programs which combine hot spring bathing, cuisine, and exercise.

    The waters of this hot spring sodium chloride spring first began emerging from the ground in 1913; these waters are renowned for warming the body and soothing away fatigue as well as leaving the skin silky smooth. From that time, the area flourished as a destination for those seeking the curative powers of hot spring bathing, and, although forced to shut down during the war, the area reopened once again in 1961. The Akita Onsen Satomi hot spring hotel makes use of the spring; the newer adjoining Onsen Center Relax draws its waters from Akita Onsen Motoyu.   • Oyu Onsen

    The waters of this hot spring district, which was designated an official recuperative by Morioka Domain in the Edo period, have been naturally welling forth from the ground along the O-yugawa River for some 800 years. This district, the closest to Lake Towada in Towada-Hachimantai National Park, is still beloved by many today. The district encompasses six hot spring lodging facilities and four public bathhouses. The waters of the area's salt springs are said to treat such ailments as nerve pain, muscle soreness, joint pain, and frozen shoulders, and are also gentle on the skin and prevent post-bath chills. In addition to Lake Towada, a deep lake up to 334 meters deep, the Kazuno area is home to countless traditional events and folk arts passed down through the centuries, and visitors can enjoy both natural beauty and history alongside soothing hot spring bathing. Kazuno is also the location of the Oyu Stone Circles, an ancient archeological site dating back to the late Jomon period.

    Kyukamura Iwateamihari Onsen is a hot spring hotel located in Shizukuishi at the foot of Mt. Iwate. The history of the hotel's legendary hot spring dates back 1,300 years. The spring waters are piped approximately two kilometers from an old caldera on Mt. Iwate, through forest and swamp, the feed five different bathing facilities on the hotel's grounds. Amihari Onsen refers to the indoor and outdoor Taishaku no Yu, indoor Hakusen no Yu, indoor and outdoor daytrip Yakushi no Yu, and outdoor Sennyo no Yu and footbath Shikaoi Ashiyu bathing facilities (note that all outdoor baths are closed in winter). The waters of the simple spring / sulfur spring (hydrogen sulfide) are said to treat such ailments as atopic dermatitis, peripheral nerve disorders, and psoriasis vulgaris.

  • Horoshin Onsen

    In 1928, pure spring waters were discovered here, giving rise to the legend of a miraculous hot spring; in turn, this ultimately resulted in the waters being analyzed in 1963, upon which it was found they did indeed have health benefits. Thus, Horoshin Onsen was born. The wonderous waters of this simple sulfur cold mineral spring were once drunk to cure disease and today they are said to treat an abundant variety of ailments, such as nerve pain, muscle soreness, joint pain, frozen shoulders, and motor paralysis. The Horoshin area is also famous for its fireflies, and at the Horoshin Spa Hotarukan hotel, owner and operator of the spring, visitors can enjoy watching the glowing sight of fireflies from early July to mid-August. The hotel's hot spring bathing facilities are open to non-guests. An autocamp campground and rental cottages, open from early May to late September, are also located on the hotel's grounds.
