    In the central plaza of Peace Memorial Park, located in Itoman City of Okinawa Prefecture, is the “Fire of Peace.” This fire was created by combining fire from Zamami Village on Aka Island, where American forces landed during the Battle of Okinawa, with fire from Hiroshima’s “Peace Flame” and Nagasaki’s “Flame of Commitment.” The original flame has been burning since 1991, and this particular flame was lit on June 23, 1995 on Okinawa Memorial Day.
