  • Bise Fukugi Tree Road

    Bise Fukugi Tree Road is a tunnel of garcinia subelliptica trees surrounding a village which is divided like a grid. The trees were planted as a wind shield for the houses and have grown. The estimated age of the oldest tree is said to be 300 years old and the bright green color is dazzling. A ride on a water buffalo cart is also recommended.

  • Shimajiri Mangrove Forests

    The Shimajiri Mangrove Forests are mangrove forests that have grown along a roughly one kilometer long inlet in the northern part of Miyako-jima (Miyako Island). This is the largest group of mangrove forests in the Miyako Islands; visitors can view a variety of different mangrove species while strolling along wooden walkways. Many wild bird species live in the mangrove forests, making this a popular place for bird-watching. At low tide, large numbers of crabs can be seen.

    Gesashi Bay’s Mangrove Forest is the largest area in Okinawa Main Island to be able to view mangroves. You can experience canoeing as well as viewing three types of mangroves: black mangroves, Kandelia obovata and Rhizophora mucronata. In 1972, it is designated as a national Natural Monument.

    Goeda Pine of Kume is counted as the top two famous pine trees in Okinawa boasted by Kume Island. The tree divided into five branches stretches in all directions and completely covers an area of 250 square meters. It is about 250 years old. It is also habitat for the Kumejima firefly, and the dance of fireflies lit up in white can be enjoyed in early May.

    This historical site is located just east of the urban area on the northern part of Tarama Island, which lies between Ishigaki Island and Miyako Island. The Utaki is a sacred site said to have been built by village commoners where they witnessed a miraculous flying stone come to rest. The beautifully scenic area has been designated as a Prefectural Natural Monument for the rows of fukugi trees that line the approximately 650-meter-long approach to the site and for the surrounding plant colony. The colony, which is densely populated by a variety of trees including yew plum pine, mastwood, and black ebony, serves as a windbreak that protects the Utaki.

  • Miyara River Mangrove

    This 35.4 square kilometer mangrove forest grows wildly along about 1.5 kilometers of both sides of the mouth of the Miyara River, the largest river on Ishigaki Island. It is comprised of a variety of mangrove species including loop-root mangroves, Kandelia obovata, and black mangroves. Designated as a national natural monument in 1972, the mangrove forest is a habitat and breeding ground for a wide variety of wildlife including wild birds, butterflies, crabs, and fish. Cruising this mangrove river by canoe or standup paddleboard (SUP) is a popular activity. Tours offer participants the chance to explore caves located well up the Miyara River that are only accessible by canoe or similar means.

    This wetland in Nagura, Ishigaki City is comprised of marshlands, shoals, and mudflats. It is a habitat for virgin mangrove forests and other subtropical plants as well as rare organisms including the Chinese box turtle, a national Natural Monument. The wetlands are also a well-known waterfowl habitat and are listed in the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat. Visitors can enjoy nature observation, clam digging, kayaking, and other activities.

  • The Great Une Sotetsu Palms

    Sago palm trees located in Une, Kumejima Town, Shimajiri County. Visitors can pay admission to see these two trees, 4 meters and 6 meters tall, growing in the garden of a traditional-style house. The trees are said to be as much as 300 years old, but their exact age is unknown. They have been designated Prefectural Natural Monuments.
