This zenzai (red bean sweet) specialty shop is in Toguchi of Motobu Town in Kunigami County, across from the town market. Okinawa's zenzai is different from that of Honshu in that it generally refers to shaved ice combined with sweet boiled kidney beans and other toppings. “Aragaki Zenzai” only serves this type of zenzai, and since the store opened, it has enjoyed popularity for over 50 years.

Okinawa Pref. Nahashi Makishi 1-1-39 STEP Building 1F
At the end of New Paradise Street along the way to Kokusai-dori Street, you’ll come across this ball donut specialty shop. As the name implies, ball donuts are donuts in the shape of a ball, and they’re different from sata andagi (Okinawan deep-fried dough buns). Basic ball donuts are covered in sugar made from sugarcane, though varieties topped with lemon and natural sugar, salt and butter, and “Churakoibeni (a kind of sweet potato)” are also available, among others.

We loved this small cafe with its signature ball donuts in many flavors but the signature will be lemon flavor. Worth a try

Okinawa Areas

around-area-map

Let go of your image of a busy, ordered Japan and replace it with crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and relaxing folk music: You’ve arrived in Okinawa. A world away from the high intensity of Tokyo, Okinawans appear to live a laid-back beach life on this paradisiacal tropical island that lies in the middle of the East China Sea almost 1,000 kilometers south of mainland Japan’s most southern tip. Home to a spattering of islands, prepare yourself to discover underwater caves, star-shaped sand, and an island culture sometimes unrecognizable from mainland Japan.
