A Shinto shrine dedicated to Ninigi, a god who is part of the myth of the founding of Japan. The current main shrine building was erected in 1715, although the shrine is believed to have been founded around the sixth century on Setoo Hill between Mt. Takachihonomine and Mt. Hinotokomine. Buildings such as the main shrine and worship hall are designated Important Cultural Properties. The shrine is also famous for having been visited by Sakamoto Ryoma on his honeymoon. The grounds are renowned spot for viewing the cherry blossoms and autumn foliage. A 10-minute bus ride from Kirishima-Jingu Station on the JR Nippo Main Line.

An expansive outdoor art museum located on a plateau 700 meters above sea level on Mt. Kurinodake (1,094 meters) in Yusuicho, Airagun, Kagoshima Prefecture. The extensive grounds are dotted with 23 works of art by Japanese and international artists which make use of the local terrain and natural beauty. One of the distinguishing features of the museum’s pieces is that in addition to be able to be enjoyed visually, visitors are free to touch and even lean on them. Most museum goers enjoy taking photos together with the unique exhibits. The distinctive rectangular art hall contains the museum’s indoor exhibits and special exhibitions as well as a cafeteria where visitors can take a break.

I had wanted to see Kusama’s work but didn’t realize how much more there was to see at this museum. My son and husband expected to be finished very quickly but we were there for a couple of hours...

A Shinto shrine located in Uchi, Hayato-cho, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Also known as the Shohachimangu, Kokubu Shohachiman, and the Osumi Shohachi, this shrine is the head shrine of all Shohachiman shrines nationwide. The shrine is dedicated to the legendary Yamasachihiko and the queen Toyotamahime no Mikoto. Records state this ancient shrine was founded during the reign of Emperor Jinmu (660–585 BCE) and is believed to grant expecting mothers an easy childbirth. The Hatsu-uma Festival, held on the first Sunday after January 18 according to the old calendar, is considered one of the three biggest events in Kagoshima Prefecture. During the unusual festival, a parade of dancers journeys to the shrine led by a sacred, bell-covered horse.

This park is 670 meters above sea level, making for a scenic spot where one can see Kinko Bay and Sakurajima from the observation deck. The 390-meter-high super slider certainly packs a punch, and it is replete with other attractions including putter golf, sightseeing lifts, and a road train. At the spacious restaurant one can try Berkshire pork cuisine, and the Yokamon Market offers a range of special goods from Kirishima.

This high-class ryokan inn, one of the top ones in Kyushu, is the only non-train car lodging facility selected for riders of “Nanatsuboshi in Kyusyu”, the luxurious sleeping car train line to stay at. The inn’s bathhouse has five different indoor and outdoor baths which are filled undiluted from a hydrogen carbonate spring. Customers can relax in an outdoor bath and take in a stunning view of a mountain stream; the outdoor baths can also be reserved for a private session depending on the time of day. The inn serves seasonal kaiseki course cuisine made with an abundance of fresh, local Kagoshima ingredients. A park built in an area where famous historical figure Sakamoto Ryoma stayed during his honeymoon. There’s a free footbath in the park as well as a museum (entry fee required) which presents the connection between Kirishima, Sakamoto Ryoma, and his wife Narasaki Ryo. A day trip hot spring bathhouse on the grounds draws its waters from a source spring Ryoma and his wife bathed in. The bathhouse is open from 9:00 to 18:00 and is closed on Mondays. The spring is a hydrogen carbonate spring. The facility sells towels, soap, and shampoo. Visitors can also view a bathtub said to have been used by Ryoma and Ryo.

A park located on a 192-meter-high hill. The park is located a 25-minute drive from the Mizobe-Kagoshimakuko interchange on the Kyushu Expressway. The spacious park’s facilities include a children’s field, roller slide, 1,350-meter-long go-cart course, and miniature golf course. There’s also an outdoor stage, Ferris wheel with a sweeping view of the Kokubu Plain, and other facilities which can entertain a family with children all day. The park’s 20-meter-high observatory boasts a spectacular view of the city. In April, visitors can enjoy the site of cherry tree and azalea blossoms, and each year the park bustles with visitors come to relax and enjoy the flowers.

A Shinto shrine guarded not by stone lion dogs but rather stone boar. The shrine is dedicated to Wake no Kiyomaro, an ancient government official. The shrine used guardian boar statues because, according to legend, Kiyomaro’s palanquin was protected by a wild boar when he landed in Buzen Province with the aim of visiting Usa Jingu Shrine. The shrine is believed to grant worshippers boons relating to traffic safety, scholarly pursuits, and construction. Sakamoto Ryoma and his wife also visited the shrine during their honeymoon and a monument on the grounds commemorates this fact. Some 100 wisteria plants grow on the grounds of Wake Park in front of the shrine and a wisteria festival is held here each year from April to May when the plants are in bloom.

和気清麻呂を祀った神社で学問、建築の神様です。和気の湯があるのも温泉地らしい。坂本龍馬が新婚旅行で訪れたそうです。

A shochu distillery established in 1911. The distillery’s flagship Akarui Noson is made the traditional way in earthenware pots with spring water. Other than the first three days of the new year, visitors can view the distillery any day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The distillery tour takes 15 minutes and during the guided tour you can see everything from the actual production area where shochu is being made to the bottle filling area. The distillery’s shop offers samples and sells liqueurs and shochu liquors made on-site. Visitors can also hand draw their own shochu label and create their very own, one of a kind bottle of shochu.

This public hot spring bathhouse, located in the Kirishima Onsenkyo hot spring district, offers delightful, low-cost hot spring bathing. The bathhouse has separate men's and women's indoor bathing areas and outdoor baths, as well as saunas which make use of natural geothermal heat. The bathhouse also incorporates universal design principles, and there are no steps from the entrance to the bathing areas. The bathhouse has developed and owns its own hot spring source, and the baths in the spacious indoor bathing areas are supplied with an abundance of free-flowing spring water straight from the source. The waters of this simple hot spring have a sulfur smell and are said to treat such ailments as fatigue, diabetes, anemia, and eczema. After your bath, try a soft-boiled hot spring egg made using hot spring steam.

A large park built as part of celebrations commemorating the 100th anniversary of the start of the Meiji period (1868-1912). One of the largest parks in the prefecture, the park’s exercise and activity facilities include a 1,000-meter-long go-cart course, multipurpose ground, and roller-skating rink. The Maruoka Sakuraen restaurant, located on the grounds, serves set meals and soba noodles made by hand using Maruoka buckwheat flour. Visitors can stay overnight in the Komorebi no Sato bungalows and enjoy barbecuing. Also considered one of the top destinations for cherry blossom viewing in the prefecture, each year in spring when the trees are in bloom the park bustles with visitors.

This facility includes a tourist information center and restaurant as well as a souvenir shop and farmers’ market selling specialty goods of Kirishima and Kagoshima, located in the middle of the Kirishima hot spring village. Inside are popular foot baths one can use for free or at low cost (40–45 degrees, chloride water). There is also an area selling foods steamed by hot spring water, including eggs, manju (yeast buns) and sweetcorn.

霧島温泉郷(丸尾)にある飲食店、お土産屋、観光案内所もある中心的なスポットです。公共交通利用の場合には、丸尾バス停の目前に立地しており、バス待ちの際にも利用できます。韓国岳登山を終え、霧島神宮へ移動するバス待ちの間に利用しました。私は温泉で蒸した野菜、卵が目に付きました。値段も手頃だったので「温泉たまご」を買って食べましたが、普通に美味しかったです。

Situated along a steep river valley, the bathhouse' indoor baths command views of the Amori River and have an open, airy feeling similar to an outdoor bath. The bathhouse' source spring is extremely hot and thus its waters are cooled by diluting them with Kirishima mountain spring water, and customers can make use of two natural free-flowing spring baths, one hot and one lukewarm. The waters of the bathhouse' hydrogen carbonate spring are said to be remarkably effective at treating nerve pain, cuts, burns, and even heat rash. The bathhouse also has a cafe and offers overnight accommodations without meals.

This hot spring bathhouse is located inside of a renovated former hot spring inn right in front of Yoshimatsu Station. It is equipped with gender-separate indoor baths and two private indoor baths. The baths are fed with clear and colorless free-flowing water straight from a simple hot spring located 480 meters underground. The water has a refreshing feel and is popular for its skin beautifying properties. Towels, soap, and other items are available for purchase at the bathhouse.

ＪＲ肥薩線とＪＲ吉都線との乗り換えが2時間半も有ったＪＲ吉松駅。旅行計画時から駅横の資料館とＳＬ，そして駅前のこの温泉で時間を潰すことを計画して実行しました。銭湯ですねここは、温泉と言う面影はありませんが鹿児島市内の銭湯もこんな感じでした。

This tourism complex, built in the shinden-zukuri style like a Heian period palace, adjoins Kirishima Shrine a 15-minute drive from Kirishimajingu Station on the JR Nippo Main Line. A variety of crafts made using Yakushima cedar are displayed in the Yakusugi Shiryokan hall. Visitors can also try making Ryujin ware porcelain in the Togei Kobo Ryujin ware ceramics studio. Visitors are free to look at the class crafts made and displayed in the Glass Kobo studio. Visitors can also purchase Yakushima cedar, porcelain, and glass crafts in the complex' crafts shop. Additionally, there's the detached Satsuma Jokiya confectionary shop and the Jingutei restaurant.

霧島神宮から南側を走る国道近くに向かうと、観光案内所やいくつかのお店などが集まっている門前町に出ました。門前町の川側の一段低い場所に、こちらの施設、霧島民芸村がありました。「霧島民芸村」ってなんだろうと思いながら向かうと、立派なお屋敷のような建物がありました。中には屋久杉でつくられた大きな木工製品などが並んでいます。屋久杉史料館もありました。

The separate men's and women's indoor bathing areas are replete with a variety of baths, including a hinoki cypress bath, redolent with the fragrance of the wood; a jacuzzi; and a footbath. The bathhouse also has open and airy outdoor baths and private reservable indoor baths, as well as a delightful granite stone sauna. The bathhouse makes use of a sodium-hydrogen carbonate spring whose waters have a nice texture, and customers rave about their beautifying properties. This day-use hot spring bathhouse, located an 18-minute drive from the Hayato-higashi Interchange on the Kyushu Expressway, has only private reservable baths, each of which is decorated in elegant Japanese style. Encircled by seasonal flowering trees, the bathhouse has 21 private bathing rooms, each with its own style, and each of which has an indoor bath and an outdoor bath. The bathhouse also has bathing rooms which incorporate universal design principles or have additional facilities such as a mist sauna or Shigaraki ware beautifying air bubble bath. The baths are supplied with free-flowing spring water from a sodium hydrocarbonate spring whose waters can also be drunk for health benefits. Each bathing room is replete with body soap, shampoo, and conditioner.

2,700の梔子（くちなし）を利用しました。内風呂も露天風呂もゆったり入れる大きさで、とろとろのお湯で肌がつるつるします。内風呂は50℃のお湯と水を混ぜながら温度を調節しながら張り、ある程度一杯になったらお湯の出は少なくなります。人気と聞いていて10時前に駐車場に付きましたが、次々に車が入ってくるので急いで入口に並びました。風呂上がりに休憩室でゆっくりくつろげるのもとてもいいです。

A park situated on a small hill with a view of the city located in Isa City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Famous for its “1,000” cherry trees and two-kilometer-long avenue of cherries, the park was selected for inclusion in a list of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots in 1990. During the peak blooming period, the park is lit up at night with over 1,000 paper lanterns, giving visitors the chance to enjoy beautiful views of cherry blossoms both during the day and in the evening.
