    Kagoshima Pref. Kagoshimashi Shiroyamachou
A small, 107 meter tall mountain located in the center or an urban area in Kagoshima City. The site of a castle which belonged to the powerful Kaminoyama family during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the mountain was also where the last bloody battle of the Satsuma Rebellion took place in 1877. Covered with some 400 year old great camphor trees, ferns, and sweet viburnum, and over 600 other varieties of plants, the mountain is a natural treasure trove home to countless wild birds and insects. A verdant walking path leads to a lookout deck and the sweeping view of Kagoshima City is breathtaking. The mountain was designated a national Historic Site and Natural Monument in 1931.
  • Saigo Takamori’s Hideout

    Kagoshima Pref. Kagoshimashi Shiroyamachou
Located immediately by the Saigo Takamori Dokutsu-mae bus stop on the Kagoshima City View route, this cave is where Saigo Takamori spent his last days with the administrators of his private school during the final stages of the Satsuma rebellion after returning from fighting numerous battles around Kyushu in 1877. They spent the six days from September 19th through 24th in this cave. It is a vital historic landmark as the site where Saigo lead the Satsuma army at the Battle of Shiroyama against the government military until the end. It was designated as a historic landmark of Kagoshima City in 1974.
  • Irikihama Beach

    Kagoshima Hioki-shi Fukiagecho Iriki
"This beautiful stretch of white sand beach and green pine trees is a part of Fukiagehama, a beach which is 47-kilometers-long north to south and which is counted as one of Japan's three largest beaches. From the beginning of spring through the fall, visitors can go clamming for free and hunt for Gomphina aequilatera clams, Latona cuneata clams (known as ""nange"" in the local dialect), and other shellfish. The beach is left in a natural state with no shellfish aquaculture or releases conducted, meaning you are not guaranteed to find anything during your clamming expedition, but other varieties you might find include Macridiscus melanaegis clams and Mactra chinensis clams. The beach is also convenient, with parking, toilets, and a foot-washing area nearby."

Kagoshima Areas

around-area-map

Over 100 active volcanoes across Kagoshima make it one of the Japan's most exciting prefectures. The prefectural capital, Kagoshima city, looks out to one of the prefecture’s most spectacular volcanoes, Sakurajima, an island of its own that can be visited and seen close up or admired from afar, with the promise of breathtaking sunsets complete with frequent puffs of smoke and ash. Down the Satsuma Peninsula, the most southerly part of mainland Japan, waterfalls, sand onsen, and fascinating history await, while Kagoshima's abundance of satsuma imo (sweet potato) provide a wholesome snack as well as one of Japan's favourite drinks - shochu.
