The museum is located on the site of Kagoshima Castle (Tsurumaru Castle), the residence of the Shimazu family. The moat, stone walls, and stone bridge from the Kagoshima Castle period still remain on the grounds (designated as a prefectural historic site).

Visited this museum after it had been recommended by someone in the community center nearby, which I passed after coming from the ferry terminal on foot. For the price, building design, display...

    Kagoshima Pref. Kagoshimashi Higashisengokuchou 14-10
This long-established eel specialty restaurant is located in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, on Tenmonkan Street in the downtown area. The restaurant uses the eels from Osumi Peninsula, which are special even among Kagoshima’s abundance of eel farms, due to the care taken in raising them with the spring water from the Shirasu Plateau. Soaked in a secret sauce that had been handed down for around 80 years, the restaurant’s prized eels are grilled over a charcoal fire. Popular menu items include the “Unadon” and “Unaju,” which are bursting with the delicious taste of the eels. A square of colored paper on which the children’s author, Hatoju Muku wrote “Sueyoshi has the best eel in Japan” is displayed here.

At Tenmonkan street, where we found Favori bakery, 100¥ shop, Kagoshima speciality shop and chanced upon this unagi eel shop. It was packed withlocal tourists. The young lady serving us introduced...

A popular ramen restaurant that is also one of Kagoshima's best located in the Temmonkan-dori shopping arcade. As its name implies in Japanese, the restaurant's specialty Tontoro Ramen is topped with pork that practically melts in your mouth. The broth, made with pork bones, chicken bones, and seafood, is surprisingly light, making it popular with the shop's women customers as well. The rice with roasted pork is also popular and includes a heaping helping of chashu roast pork made with neck meat, a rare delicacy of which only a small amount can be obtained from one animal. A three-minute walk from Takamibaba Station on the municipal tram.

My sinful indulgence while still living in Kagoshima. Broth was thick and sumptuous, all that bone brothy goodness just overflowing in every spoonful.

A traditional ryotei Japanese restaurant located a three-minute walk from Takamibaba Station on the City Tram. Owned and operated by the local JA agricultural cooperative with the aim of promoting sales within the prefecture and beyond, here customers can enjoy meat dishes created based on the concept of local production for local consumption. The restaurant’s shabu-shabu, seiro mushi steamed dishes, and piping hot stone plate sautéed dishes are made with meats like Kagoshima’s vaunted brand Kagoshima black beef, and flavorful Kagoshima Berkshire pork. The seiro mushi steamed dishes, which bring out the innate flavor of the ingredients, are hearty yet light, making them particularly popular with women. This restaurant is a great place to enjoy local Berkshire pork.

Passing through the secret hideaway-like entryway, customers are greeted by décor which engenders a soothing, relaxing atmosphere, and the establishment is replete with semi-private and private seating areas. “Shochuan” means “Shochu Hermitage,” and as its name implies, the pub carries a wide lineup of sweet potato shochu liquors. Kagoshima Areas

Over 100 active volcanoes across Kagoshima make it one of the Japan's most exciting prefectures. The prefectural capital, Kagoshima city, looks out to one of the prefecture’s most spectacular volcanoes, Sakurajima, an island of its own that can be visited and seen close up or admired from afar, with the promise of breathtaking sunsets complete with frequent puffs of smoke and ash. Down the Satsuma Peninsula, the most southerly part of mainland Japan, waterfalls, sand onsen, and fascinating history await, while Kagoshima's abundance of satsuma imo (sweet potato) provide a wholesome snack as well as one of Japan's favourite drinks - shochu.
