A history museum which presents the culture of the Satsuma (Kagoshima) region. The museum building was modeled after the Byodoin’s Phoenix Hall. The museum’s exhibits and exhibitions are designed around the concept of experiencing the history and culture of Satsuma with all five senses. Much of the museum’s collection consists of works of art from China and Satsuma handed down through the ages since ancient times in the region, including gorgeous ceramics decorated with gold. The museum also displays historic texts, medals, and calligraphic works dating to the late Edo period. Visitors can enjoy the tastes of Satsuma in the museum restaurant.

Approximately a 15-minute walk from Kagoshima Station, this memorial park is located to the south of the Tofukuji Castle ruins. Five arched stone bridges related to the famous late Edo period (1603-1868) stonemason Iwanaga Sangoro once spanned the Kotsuki River that flows through the center of Kagoshima City. However, two bridges were lost due to damage that occurred from torrential rains in 1993. The remaining three bridges were relocated and restored with renovation of the river, and the area was turned into a park. In addition, the Ishibashi Memorial Hall was also established, and introduces the history of the five bridges including what was lost, and the technology used during bridge construction. Various events are held in the park every month.

A cape located on the southernmost tip of Kyushu facing the Osumi Strait. Located at 31 degrees north, the same latitude as New Delhi and Cairo, the cape is warm year round and subtropical plants such as Livistona and sago palms flourish here. Cape Sata Observatory Park and the surrounding area are currently closed due to renovations (as of January 2017) and are scheduled to reopen in 2018.

A roadside station located in Okawa, Akune City nine kilometers south of downtown Akune. Facing the majestic beauty of the East China Sea, the station is the first one situated along National Route 3. Facilities include an information counter with information on area roads and roadside stations as well as terminals and bulletin boards offering information on nearby medical institutions and weather conditions. Making use of the bounties of both sea and land found in the area, the station’s local specialty products market sells local seafood, vegetables, and specialty products made from the same. The seafood served by the station’s restaurant is quite popular and the establishment serves set meals made with ingredients like silver-stripe round herring, a spring delicacy in Akune.

An art museum opened as part of Kagoshima City 100th anniversary celebrations in 1989. Visitors are greeted by Rodin’s “The Thinker” at the main entrance. The museum displays some 1,000 pieces, including paintings and sculptures, by international artists like Rodin and Chagall, as well as Satsuma ware. The museum also holds special exhibitions in a dedicated space one to two times a year. After checking out the museum, visitors can enjoy a casual light meal or cup of tea in the museum’s café, which boasts a sweeping view of Sakurajima and Kagoshima City.

We visited this museum on our last day in Kagoshima. The most memorable museum was the Chiran Peace museum but this came a close second for different reasons. The museum was established 20 years ago...

This botanical garden raises nearly 2000 wild and cultivated varieties of tropical plants and fruits. Sweet scents hang in the air at the garden, which offers visitors a rare glimpse at bananas, mangoes, papayas, guavas, and other tropical fruits actually growing on the plant. Visitors can also sample fresh-picked tropical fruits, jams, and other items at the garden's restaurant. It sells juices such as tankan citrus juice and guava juice as well as handmade jams such as Japanese plum jam. Both make excellent souvenirs.

This is a museum where you can learn about the history, nature and life of the Amami archipelago including Riccho, Yoron Town, Yoron Island. The fifth floor observation deck, the highest floor on the island, offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding area, and on days with good weather, the northern part of Okinawa and the neighboring islands can also be seen. You can enjoy exhibitions on different themes such as the sea and life from the first floor to the fourth floor. It also exhibits paintings by Masatoshi Ikeda, an artist from Yoron Island, items that belonged to Yoko Mori, who loved Yoron, and bicycles used in movies. It also introduces the special products and dialects of Yoron for an enjoyable tour.

Kagoshima Pref. Minamisatsumashi Kasedatakahashi 1955-3

A museum built on the site of the former Bansei Airfield, the last base used by the army for kamikaze fighters during the Pacific War. Opened in 1993, the museum’s numerous exhibits include Japan’s only extant Navy Type Zero reconnaissance seaplane (Aichi E13A), messages left by blood relatives of kamikaze fighters, and articles which belonged to kamikaze fighters as well as portraits. Through testimony provided by relatives and people involved as well as other videos, visitors can learn about the final moments of close to 200 kamikaze fighters, including pilots as young as 17. A memorial service is held in front of the museum’s monument each year in April.

This science facility is located in Yakushima Town, Kumage County, Kagoshima Prefecture. It provides information about the wildlife and culture of Yakushima, as well as guides and community events. Inside the center, there is are models and panels, as well as a large video hall where the wildlife of Yakushima is displayed through dynamic exhibitions. A Shinto shrine located on top of Mt. Shinki 10-minute drive from Sendai Station. Unusually, the grounds also encompass an imperial tomb. The stately architecture which once led to it being called the “top shrine in Satsuma Province” is still intact today, and some say the power of the land is strong here. The shrine is dedicated to Ninigi-no-Mikoto, god of rice. The Bou-odori and Yakko-odori dances offered during the shrine’s rice planting festival in June have been designated Intangible Folk-Cultural Properties by the prefecture. According to legend, expecting mothers who rub the heads of the lion-dog statues carrying cubs in front of the shrine will be granted an easy delivery, and the shrine is also frequented by couples seeking to be blessed with children.

A roadside station facing the coast along National Route 226. The station has a hot spring bathhouse and heated pool facility which look out over Kinko Bay. The Yahata Onsen Hoyokan building houses hot spring baths, a shop, and restaurant. There’s also a popular indoor pool area with a 53-meter-long water slide, and a multipurpose ground where visitors can enjoy golfing. The station’s large indoor bath and lie down bath are supplied by an alkaline simple hot spring whose waters are said to treat nerve pain and joint pain. Visitors can relax and refresh both body and mind in this casual hot spring resort. The station’s popular store is filled with Kiire exclusive products like local miso and chiffon cake.

A roadside station which carries a wide selection of local specialty products located a five-minute drive from the Sueyoshitakarabe interchange on the Kyushu Expressway. In the seasonal market area, there’s a farmer’s market selling fresh produce and local specialty products. The foods made with yuzu, a citrus fruit which is a Sueyoshi specialty product, are particularly popular. Other facilities include a restaurant, exhibition space and multipurpose hall, and craft workshop room. The restaurant, a certified Kagoshima Local Production for Local Consumption Promotion Establishment, is so popular lines of waiting customers form outside its door during lunch time. Lunch is served all-you-can-eat buffet style, and diners can enjoy an astonishing variety of Western, Japanese, and Chinese dishes made with local ingredients.

This observatory is located at an altitude of approximately 415 meters. From it, visitors can see various scenery, such as the cityscape of Koniya below, as well as Oshima Strait and Kakeromajima Island. It is also famous for its beautiful sunset views and many tourists visit in the evenings. There is a parking lot available, as well as a path surrounded by lush nature that leads up to the observatory.

古仁屋の街並みを見下ろす展望台です。国道５８号から外れ、車で１５分ほど山道を登っていくと着きます。展望台からは大島海峡や加計呂麻島、請島や与路島まで眺めあることができます。まさに多島美を実感できる場所です。そして、この展望台は夕日スポットとして有名です。訪れた日は雲がかかっていて完璧な夕日を見ることができませんでした。それでも、夕日に照らされた奄美諸島を眺めることができて満足です！

A history and natural history museum located a five-minute walk from the “Saigo Dozo-mae” stop on the City View bus line. The museum was originally established to keep records on the great Taisho period eruptions of Sakurajima. The main building consists of animal displays and a special exhibition space on the first floor, an exhibit on the natural beauty of Kagoshima within a 600-kilometer area stretching north and south on the second floor, and exhibits such as a 3D theater which introduce the industries harnessing the natural abundance of Kagoshima on the third floor. A planetarium as well as displays of a variety of dinosaur skeletons, ammonites, and other fossils can be found on the fourth floor of Houzan Hall, the museum’s annex.

A tourist information center located near the “Miyanourako Iriguchi” bus stop. Visitors can get information such as on traffic conditions and recommended sightseeing destinations. The center’s souvenir and gift market carries over 5,000 local Yakushima specialty products, and visitors can purchase everything from Yakushima cedar handicrafts to original confections and other products offered no place else. A restaurant “Rest-In Yakushima” on the second floor boasts a view of the sea and diners can enjoy local Yakushima dishes like fresh seafood cooked with rice, and local delicacies such as flying fish.

A municipal zoo located in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture which cares for some 1,000 animals of around 140 species, including the park’s popular koalas. The facility is distinguished by its use of Kagoshima’s natural beauty and hot springs, and visitors can enjoy a relaxing hot spring foot bath while watching animals and the African Savanna where giraffes and other African animals stroll about backed by such sights as Sakurajima and Kinko Bay. Many of the park’s exhibits are fenceless and complete recreate the animal’s natural environment, giving visitors the opportunity to learn about the animals’ natural ecologies while having fun. A literature museum located a seven-minute walk from Asahidori Station on the Kagoshima City Tram bound for Kagoshima Station and leaving from JR Kagoshima-Chuo Station. Visitors can come in contact with literary works connected to Kagoshima through the museum’s permanent exhibit, which looks at 28 writers with a particularly strong link to the area. The adjoining Marchen Fairy Tale Museum is fun for adults as well as children, and visitors can feel like they’re in their very own fairy tale through exhibits such as trick art, playground equipment, and seasonal events and decorations. A joint admission ticket which includes entry to both facilities is available.

Over 100 active volcanoes across Kagoshima make it one of the Japan's most exciting prefectures.
