    Kagoshima Amami-shi Sumiyocho Yakugachi
"""Mangrove"" is a general term for the wild plants that inhabit marshlands and tidelands in tropical and subtropical regions. 94% of Amami City's Sumiyo-cho on southern Amami Oshima Island is covered by mountainous forests. The former town also boasts a magnificent forest of Kandelia obovata and Bruguiera gymnorhiza mangroves (special protection area of Amamigunto National Park) that extends across the estuary of Sumiyo Bay, which faces the Pacific Ocean. The forest, which extends over more than 71 hectares of the estuary shared by the Yakugachi River and the Sumiyo River. Two companies offer canoeing tours of the mangrove forest. Tour participants can enjoy the extraordinary experience of feeling like adventurers as they pilot canoes through waterways surrounded by mangroves."
  • Matate-no Iwaya Cave
    Travel / Tourism
    Kagoshima Kumage-gun Nakatane Cho Masuda
This gaping cave is located next to the Injo Coast. The name stems from a legend that Tanegashima Hatatoki, the 10th lord of the island, suddenly disappeared here long ago, leaving his horse standing at the cave's entrance. The Injo Coast has long been known as a place of scenic beauty thanks to its unusual natural rock formations and giant boulders. The sea cave, which was formed by wave erosion over countless years, quietly blends into the landscape. Entering the cave is currently prohibited due to the danger of falling rocks and cave-ins.
  • Fucha
    Travel / Tourism
    Kagoshima Oshima-gun Wadomaricho Kunigami 216-1
"This sea cave is located a 10-minute drive from Okinoerabu Airport, and a 15-minute drive from Wadomari Port. The cave is the result of a raised coral reef eroded by the rough waves of the East China Sea. ""Fucha"" means ""to spout into the air,"" and on days when the sea is rough or waves are high due to a typhoon, etc., the cave can spout jets of water over 10 meters in the air. On calm days, wild sea turtles can sometimes be seen swimming in the cave. A walking trail along the coastline leads to the cave from the direction of the airport."
  • Irikihama Beach
    Travel / Tourism
    Kagoshima Hioki-shi Fukiagecho Iriki
"This beautiful stretch of white sand beach and green pine trees is a part of Fukiagehama, a beach which is 47-kilometers-long north to south and which is counted as one of Japan's three largest beaches. From the beginning of spring through the fall, visitors can go clamming for free and hunt for Gomphina aequilatera clams, Latona cuneata clams (known as ""nange"" in the local dialect), and other shellfish. The beach is left in a natural state with no shellfish aquaculture or releases conducted, meaning you are not guaranteed to find anything during your clamming expedition, but other varieties you might find include Macridiscus melanaegis clams and Mactra chinensis clams. The beach is also convenient, with parking, toilets, and a foot-washing area nearby."
  • Onami Pond
    Travel / Tourism
    Kagoshima Kirishima-shi Makizonocho Takachiho
This mountaintop crater lake, praised for its cobalt blue water, is the largest in Japan and is situated on top of the 1,241-meter-high Kirishima Mountains. Found amidst virgin Japanese fir and southern Japanese hemlock forest, a stone-paved mountain trail makes it possible to reach the pond from the trailhead in about 40 minutes. Another walking path circling the pond can be walked in about two hours. Visitors at the beginning of spring can see Japanese witch-hazel and Rhododendron kiusianum blooming in profusion along the crater wall; in autumn, the fall foliage of maples and red pines; and in winter, frost-covered trees.

    Kagoshima Kirishima-shi
Located a 25-minute drive from Kirishimajingu Station on the JR Nippo Main Line, this is the location of chief trailhead leading up Mt. Takachiho, a 970-meter-high mountain situated in the southeastern part of the Kirishima Mountains. Also the former location of Kirishima Shrine before it was destroyed due to an eruption of Mihachi, the ruins of the old shrine can be found here as well. In addition, there is a visitor's center and shop, and during the climbing season the area bustles with mountain climbers and hikers. A cluster of Rhododendron kiusianum grows in the area which blossom with pink flowers around late May each year. In autumn, the contrast between Mt. Takachiho and the area's fall foliage is stunning.

Kagoshima Areas

around-area-map

Over 100 active volcanoes across Kagoshima make it one of the Japan's most exciting prefectures. The prefectural capital, Kagoshima city, looks out to one of the prefecture’s most spectacular volcanoes, Sakurajima, an island of its own that can be visited and seen close up or admired from afar, with the promise of breathtaking sunsets complete with frequent puffs of smoke and ash. Down the Satsuma Peninsula, the most southerly part of mainland Japan, waterfalls, sand onsen, and fascinating history await, while Kagoshima's abundance of satsuma imo (sweet potato) provide a wholesome snack as well as one of Japan's favourite drinks - shochu.
