    Kagoshima Kagoshima-shi Yanagimachi 5-6
This venerable producer of sweet potato shochu has been in business since 1730. It is also the only shochu distillery in urban Kagoshima City. Originally a sake brewery, it is said to have presented its sake to the heads of the Shimazu Clan during the Edo period. The company was forced to switch to distilling sweet potato shochu during the Second World War after the distillery was destroyed in a 1945 air raid. Their top brands include Sagara Judaime, which is made with the new Satsuma Matsuri sweet potato cultivar, Sagara, which is made with Kogane Sengan sweet potatoes, and Sagara Chuemon, a shochu with a high alcohol content named after the company's founder.

    Kagoshima Nishinoomote Nishinoomote 13589-3
"A venerable distillery founded in 1903. It is located almost in the center of Tanegashima Island along Prefectural Route 76. It employs the ""Kametsubo Jikomi"" (earthenware vat) method of making shochu (sweet potato liquor) and has used the same old-style earthenware vats for many years. In addition, the shochu is made from sweet potatoes grown organically on the company's own 45-hectare farm. The water used in the manufacturing process comes from deep groundwater in the paleogenic geological layer 306 meters beneath the distillery, the so-called Takenota Spring. The great care that the distillery takes with the ingredients and the manufacturing process is one of the things that attracts customers. The finished shochu is known for its deep and mellow flavor. Visitors who make reservations ahead of time can tour the distillery, and the associated shop offers tasting sessions."

    Kagoshima Oshima-gun Yoroncho Chabana 226-1
"This is the only brewery on Yoron Island that produces Amami brown sugar shochu. It was founded under American military rule in 1947. It draws up groundwater and seawater from Yoron Island and desalinated soft water with a good taste to use for brewing and mixing. The representative brand ""Yusen"" is loved by the locals to the extent that it has also become synonymous with sake from Yoron Island. While mainly 20% ABV, it is also made in 25% and 35% ABV varieties."

Kagoshima Areas

around-area-map

Over 100 active volcanoes across Kagoshima make it one of the Japan's most exciting prefectures. The prefectural capital, Kagoshima city, looks out to one of the prefecture’s most spectacular volcanoes, Sakurajima, an island of its own that can be visited and seen close up or admired from afar, with the promise of breathtaking sunsets complete with frequent puffs of smoke and ash. Down the Satsuma Peninsula, the most southerly part of mainland Japan, waterfalls, sand onsen, and fascinating history await, while Kagoshima's abundance of satsuma imo (sweet potato) provide a wholesome snack as well as one of Japan's favourite drinks - shochu.
