  • Kuroda Vassals Grave
    Travel / Tourism
    Miyazaki Hyuga-shi Hyuga Misaki
This historic site is located in Hososhima Port. This is the place where it is believed that the bodies Kuroda Domain vassal Kaiga Kyumo and two other imperial loyalists washed ashore when they were slaughtered while under guard and being escorted after being captured in the Teradaya Incident which occurred in Kyoto's Fushimi in 1862 in the late Edo period. It is said that local residents who found the bodies erected a tombstone for them, and today a more recently built gravestone can be found on the islet marking the presumed location. At low tide, the site becomes connected to the peninsula, making it possible to walk it.
  • Komenoyama Observatory
    Travel / Tourism
    Miyazaki Hyuga-shi Hichiya
This observatory, situated on top of Mt. Komenoyama, is located an 18-minute drive from Hyugashi Station. On clear days, visitors can take in a sweeping view of Hyuga City from the 192-meter-high peak. The mountain also serves as a base for paragliding, and many paragliders take off into the skies from here during the day. The observatory is also known for its night view, and many people from the city and beyond come to this popular from dusk and after to enjoy the sight. The observatory faces the sea, and accordingly visitors who want to take in the city's nightscape are recommended to do so from the observatory's parking lot rather than the observatory itself as it offers a better view.
  • Cape Hyuga Green Park

    Miyazaki Hyuga-shi Hichiya 682-148

As the mountain is also used as a paragliding practice ground, if you're lucky you may get to see paragliders taking off from the peak.

    Travel / Tourism
    Miyazaki Hyuga-shi Mimitsumachi
"According to legend, this famous area, situated on the north side of the Mimitsu Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, is the place where Emperor Jinmu set sail. Accordingly, as a sacred site from which the emperor is believed to have departed, it was deemed the ""birthplace of the Japanese Navy."" The site's monument stands at the entrance to Tateiwa Shrine and is inscribed with calligraphy by Mitsumasa Yonai, an admiral in the Japanese Navy who was also Prime Minister of Japan at the time the monument was built. The huge stone monument is over 10 meters tall; a modern naval vessel anchor is displayed in front of it."
  • Hyuga City Museum of History and Folk
    Travel / Tourism
    Miyazaki Hyuga-shi Mimitsumachi 3244
This museum operates out of a remodeled and restored establishment called the Kawachiya, a cargo wholesale store and home complex built at the end of the Edo period. The site has been designated a Tangible Cultural Property by the city; the museum's courtyard and kura storehouse contain recreations presenting what life was like in a merchant home of the time. Divided into three sections dedicated to archeology, history, and folk customs, the museum preserves and displays items relating to each category and the history and culture of Hyuga City. The museum's collection includes a large number of the kinds of items merchants used such as account books, abacuses, and writing desks. The museum is a 20-minute drive from the Hyuga Interchange on the Higashikyushu Expressway.
  • Okuragahama Beach
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Miyazaki Hyuga-shi Hiraiwa 12298-6
This beach was selected for inclusion in the Japan's 100 Best Beaches list. The beach extends four kilometers north to south and consists of a continuous stretch of white sands and green pines. A swimming beach sprawling at the southern end is a renowned mecca for marine sports in Hyuga and is visited by large numbers of surfers from across the prefecture and beyond throughout the year. The area is also the only place in Japan where pieces for the Japanese game of go are made using common orient clam shell, and the white go pieces which are made from the beach's orient clams, known as Suwabute clams, are highly valued. Happily, the beach is replete with free parking, hot water showers, and toilets.

Miyazaki Areas

An unmissable highlight of Kyushu, Miyazaki prefecture satisfies nature lovers with its dramatic gorges cut out of rugged cliffs, leading into waterfalls and beaches of green-blue water popular among surfers. Takachiho Gorge in the north of the prefecture tells a tale of centuries-old Japanese mythology in a fantastic setting, allowing visitors to explore the waters by boat before heading up to the cave at the Awano Iwato Shrine, where the sun goddess was said to have hidden, plunging the world into darkness.
