"Here, under the courteous guidance of an instructor, visitors can experience ""shikenhan"" archery, a type of entertainment enjoyed by the samurai of the southern Kyushu region. Shikenhan was practiced by military commanders at banquets during the Warring States period and became popular among samurai warriors during the Edo period; in the mid-Meiji period, it transformed into an amusement which was enjoyed with shochu at banquets. ""Shikenhan"" means about 8.2 meters and is the distance from the shooter to the target; while the bow is about 136 centimeters and target is roughly 13.7 centimeters - accordingly, everything used in the game is equal to measurement unites in length, hence its name of ""shihan."" Today, this form of archery has been designated an Intangible Cultural Property by the city."

An unmissable highlight of Kyushu, Miyazaki prefecture satisfies nature lovers with its dramatic gorges cut out of rugged cliffs, leading into waterfalls and beaches of green-blue water popular among surfers. Takachiho Gorge in the north of the prefecture tells a tale of centuries-old Japanese mythology in a fantastic setting, allowing visitors to explore the waters by boat before heading up to the cave at the Awano Iwato Shrine, where the sun goddess was said to have hidden, plunging the world into darkness.
