This Shinto shrine is famous for being the head shrine of all 40 thousand Hachiman shrines in Japan dedicated to Emperor Ojin as the god Hachiman in a syncretic belief system which combines elements of Buddhism. Enshrining Hachiman as well as Hime and Empress Jingu, the shrine was founded in 725. The grounds are spacious, and the main shrine building, a National Treasure, is divided between an upper building located on a hill and a lower building located at the base. The first hall of the upper building is believed to provide luck with money and business; the second and third are believed to provide luck with love and easy childbirth.

A Shinto shrine located in Osada, Nakatsu City. Founded some 1,200 years ago, the main shrine building is called the “outer shrine,” while the “inner shrine” is a pond called Misumi Pond which has been deemed a “go-shintai” or physical repository of a god. The shrine’s grounds have been designated a Historic Site as well as a Natural Monument by the prefecture. The current shrine gate, built by the samurai Hosokawa Tadaoki, has been designated a National Important Cultural Property.

"This Shinto shrine can be reached by going west a short distance on the road in front of the Miyazono Community Center; the shrine will be visible on the right hand side. The shrine's office and the Kumohachimangu Culture Hall are located a little to the east beyond some private homes and farm fields. The shrine is dedicated to the gods Kumonoyahata-no-Okami and Myoken-Okami. A sacred tree which once stood on the grounds known as the ""Thousand Year Cedar"" was said to have been planted in 973, the year when the shrine was founded; even today, its mighty stump, now on display, exudes a sense of life and power and is said to grant safety and protection. Also of note is the shrine's strong connection to the Japanese mythical water goblins called kappa - for example, instead of the typical stone lion-dogs, shrine visitors are greeted by a pair of guardian kappa statues. During the shrine's annual festival on July 29, a music and dance performance called the Kappa-gaku is held which has been designated an Intangible Folk-Cultural Property by the prefecture."

Oita Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
