A low-cost public hot spring facility operated by Beppu City. Originally erected in 1879, the current building was built in 1938. In the spa’s famous sand bath, visitors lie down in sand wearing a yukata robe, after which assistants cover you with sand heated by the site’s natural hot spring. Up to eight persons can use the sand bath at the same time. Wait times may grow long when the facility is busy. A 10-minute walk from JR Beppu Station.

This place is very exceptional, it offers a very special sunna style, showing how the ancient Japanese used to apply sauna therapy, lying on a grassy ground and wearing a Japanese costume. Its a...

Visitors to this municipal hot spring facility can enjoy a steam bath which involves wearing a robe and lying in a stone hut blanketed with medicinal plants as hot spring steam warms their entire body. The facility was remodeled in 2006 but its history is ancient, having been established by the Buddhist priest Ippen in 1276 and thereafter coming to be known as a health spa. The facility also features an indoor bath where you can wash away the sweat from the steam bath, and an outdoor foot bath which is free to all.

This was a new experience for me. You first go onsen, and then you go to a small room and stay there for 8 min. It was not like a sauna, this was more comfortable. And the onsen was also clean and...

Said to have once been visited by the great Buddhist priest Kukai, this hot spring facility’s waters come from the Konya Jigoku (“Konya Hell”) hot spring source. In the facility’s wildly popular mud bath, you can enjoy a natural mud pack soaking your skin in the rich mud from the bottom of the cloudy waters of the spring. The facility features two mud bath types – a pair of separate indoor ones for men and women, and a mixed-sex outdoor bath. The mud baths and hot spring waters are said to aid in easing rheumatism, diabetes, atopy, athlete’s foot, and hernias. The nearest bus stop is Konya Jigoku-mae.

This traditional low cost public path is open 24 hours a day and is distinguished by its old fashioned, Taisho period Western-style green roof. The bathhouse has two types of baths—a lukewarm bath, and a very hot bath; the waters of both are distinctly thick and colorless. The waters are said to soothe women’s health issues, gastrointestinal disorders, and nerve pain. The facility also has seven private lodging rooms on the second floor and a large common lodging space for groups. Parking available. A two-minute walk from JR Beppu Station.

The bathhouse also has five private family baths which cannot be reserved, meaning you can choose from among any which are open at the time you come. According to legend, after a hot spring was dug up, much thought was put into what to do with it, and when it was decided to use it for hot spring bathing, the bathhouse was built in a single night; in turn, it is nicknamed the ""One Night Hot Spring."" After moving to its current location, it became such a fixture of the local community, it is said that most residents in the area had their very first bath as a baby here. The waters of the bathhouse' simple hot spring are said to treat various symptoms deriving from excess stress."

A feature of this hot spring is the thick steam which spews through the rock surface of the mountain. Also, the temperature of the water vapor is put to practical use with the breeding of animals such as hippopotamus, llamas and flamingos, so there are also some people who visit here for the small zoological gardens.

Oita Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
