This is a facility where one can try “jigoku mushi (literally, hell steaming),” a traditional cooking method passed down from the Edo era in which foods are steamed to degrees of up to 98°C using the hot steam from the hot spring water, and the rapid process condenses their flavor. Foodstuffs for hell steaming are available on site, or one can bring their own. Inside the facility are also exhibits on the history of Kanawa, hot springs and hell steaming, a drinking area, and free-to-use foot steamer and bath.

This place is popular, we waited an hour though the queue is very well managed. We weren’t so hungry so we shared a vegetable platter and the manjuku buns. Very cool experience to steam the food...

Opened by the Emperor’s chef Shiro Miyagawa in 1926, this Toriten chicken shop emerged in the early days of the Showa period as a place for chicken kamaboko tempura. Nowadays it is famous for its food loved dearly by those of Oita Prefecture. One can enjoy various tastes by adding Oita Prefecture kabosu or vinegar soy sauce and mustard. The standard menu’s “Honke Toriten Teishoku” is satisfyingly voluminous. From Beppu Station take the Kamenoi bus towards APU, alight at Funakouji, and walk five minutes.

A restaurant which mainly serves yakiniku (barbecue) located in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture and one of the largest yakiniku restaurants in Kyushu. Despite focusing on being a mass-market yakiniku restaurant, Shunkoen is still selective about the quality of its meats and has long been a beloved local favorite. Famous for its specialty Beppu reimen (cold noodles), a local Beppu specialty, the springy noodles and Japanese-style broth of this delicious gem goes great with kimchi. Rokusei Cold Noodle Specialty Shop is distinctive for its strong-bodied yet tasting-good-going-down noodles. The chashu pork and kimchi ingredients are top class, and the combination of domestic beef and soup stock carefully created with thick-leafed konbu is exquisite. Aside from reimen cold noodles, they also serve unmen (a type of somen without added oil) and ramen. It is a 12-minute walk from JR Higashi Beppu Station.

Since its opening in 1989, this long-established steak restaurant has enjoyed undying popularity. The carefully selected Bungo beef steaks are priced very reasonably, and the steaks are kept on the iron plate until the moment you eat them, so as not to let any of their juice be wasted. After customers finish eating their steak, rice is added to their plate to soak up the remaining juice, in the “Somuri style.” There are also à la carte menu items, including homemade ham and wine and a wide variety of alcohols to go with the steak.

Took us a few attempts to find this place but we’ll worth it. The fillet steak comes with all the trimmings...veg, rice and served in a rich peppercorn sauce. We watched the chef cooking cutting it...

At this Japanese restaurant, a five-minute walk from JR Yokoku Station, you can enjoy kaiseki course cuisine made with live seafood from the sea off Hiji at reasonable prices. The marbled sole mini set meal, only served at lunch, is particularly popular and is made with the area's rare brand name Shiroshita Karei marbled sole raised in ocean where freshwater intermixes. Unlike standard righteye flounder, Shiroshita Karei marbled sole is flavorful and free from off flavors, and its meat grows sweeter the more you chew. In addition to course meals, the restaurant also has a la carte dishes such as its own original marbled sole sushi, marbled sole nitsuke stewed in soy sauce, and sashimi. The restaurant's Hiji daggertooth pike conger course meals and set meals are also popular.

Hiji is an old castle town under rule of the Kinoshita family, descendants of a nephew of Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s wife. A famous delicacy from this area is flounder. Flounders caught in the sea beneath...

"At this facility located on the grounds of the Daikokuya hot spring inn located near the Kannawa Steam Bath, you can enjoy ""hell steamed"" cuisine cooked using a special steamer which harnesses the heat of the area's hot spring steam. Inn guests can use the facility for free, but non-guests can also use it for a small fee. You can purchase chicken wings and other foods provided on-site, but many customers bring their own food purchased from a nearby supermarket. Customers are provided with wicker steaming baskets to use for cooking. ""Hell steaming"" concentrates the innate flavors of the foods and is a style of cooking unique to Beppu which is highly popular with tourists."

Customers can also order ""hell steamed"" a la carte dishes. The restaurant also serves a ""hell steamed"" course meal and local kaiseki cuisine meals at night. The restaurant's steamed seafood meal and dinner kaiseki meals require an advance reservation. Customers can also enjoy a boiled tofu set meal from November to March."

Oita Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
