For over a thousand years, the gasses, hot mud, and boiling waters erupting from beneath the area from Kanawa to Kamegawa have led it to being called the Jigoku (Hells) of Beppu. In 2009, four hot springs, Umi (Sea) Jigoku, Chinoike (Blood Pond) Jigoku, Tatsumaki Jigoku, and Shiraike (White Pond) Jigoku were designated as National Places of Scenic Beauty. Visiting these four hot springs in addition to three other famous ones is fun and enjoyable. In addition to hot spring eggs (slow boiled in hot spring waters), hell-themed souvenirs such as Chinoike ointment, and Enman no Yu (bath salts) are popular to take home and give to friends. A 15-minute drive by car from JR Beppu Station.

We did the beppu hells as a day trip from Fukuoka. Public transport was easy enough to navigate. The first 2 hells were underwhelming and their aquarium and crocodile displays were, in my opinion...

Visitors to this municipal hot spring facility can enjoy a steam bath which involves wearing a robe and lying in a stone hut blanketed with medicinal plants as hot spring steam warms their entire body. The facility was remodeled in 2006 but its history is ancient, having been established by the Buddhist priest Ippen in 1276 and thereafter coming to be known as a health spa. The facility also features an indoor bath where you can wash away the sweat from the steam bath, and an outdoor foot bath which is free to all.

This was a new experience for me. You first go onsen, and then you go to a small room and stay there for 8 min. It was not like a sauna, this was more comfortable. And the onsen was also clean and...

In 1923, for the first time in Japan, the breeding of crocodiles was started which used the heat from a hot spring—the place is also referred to as “Crocodile Hell”. There are a number of crocodile breeding areas surrounding the Jigoku pond, and the number of crocodiles kept there is roughly 70. At the weekend, there is also an event where a member of staff gives food to the crocodiles, so you can observe the exciting moment when the crocodiles are fed.

The higehest temperature onsen was occuppied by the stream and surrounding by crocodiles. There are many crocodiles farming here live with the onsen.

Said to have once been visited by the great Buddhist priest Kukai, this hot spring facility’s waters come from the Konya Jigoku (“Konya Hell”) hot spring source. In the facility’s wildly popular mud bath, you can enjoy a natural mud pack soaking your skin in the rich mud from the bottom of the cloudy waters of the spring. The facility features two mud bath types – a pair of separate indoor ones for men and women, and a mixed-sex outdoor bath. The mud baths and hot spring waters are said to aid in easing rheumatism, diabetes, atopy, athlete’s foot, and hernias. The nearest bus stop is Konya Jigoku-mae.

This is a facility where one can try “jigoku mushi (literally, hell steaming),” a traditional cooking method passed down from the Edo era in which foods are steamed to degrees of up to 98°C using the hot steam from the hot spring water, and the rapid process condenses their flavor. Foodstuffs for hell steaming are available on site, or one can bring their own. Inside the facility are also exhibits on the history of Kanawa, hot springs and hell steaming, a drinking area, and free-to-use foot steamer and bath.

The bathhouse also has five private family baths which cannot be reserved, meaning you can choose from among any which are open at the time you come. The waters of the bathhouse' salt spring are said to promote warmth retention and moisturization and customers are recommended to come here for a finishing soak after visiting Myoban Onsen. Oita Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
