    Oita Oita-shi Kokubu 960-1
This museum, a two-minute walk from JR Bungo-Kokubu Station, adjoins Bungo Kokubunji Historic Park. Serving as a space where local residents can learn about the history of the area, the museum's exhibits cover prehistoric times to the early modern period and primarily focus on the Edo period. The museum building resembles a Nara period Buddhist temple. Inside, exhibits include a 1/10th scale model of the Kokubunji Temple's seven story pagoda, as well as folk artefacts such as drawings and pottery sake cups. The museum holds three themed exhibitions throughout the year as well as one special exhibition. In addition, the museum holds a class for local residents to rediscover and become more familiar with the history of the area, and activity classes such as making ancient magatama comma-shaped stone jewels.

    Oita Oita-shi Sato 646-1
This park and museum, a 15-minute drive from the Oita-Miyagawauchi Interchange on the Higashikyushu Expressway, were built around the Kamezuka Kofun Ancient Tomb, a keyhole-shaped tumulus constructed in the early Kofun period (between the end of the fourth century and the beginning of the fifth century) which is the largest of its kind in the prefecture. The museum consists of seven general zones and displays artefacts excavated from the tomb while also presenting information on the culture of kofun tombs through the use of large dioramas and model reconstructions. The museum also displays the actual Onose Sarcophagus, a prefecturally-designated Tangible Cultural Property; and reproductions of period ironware. In addition, there's a mini theater and video and information space, enabling visitors to learn more via computers and images.

    Oita Oita-shi Kentokumachi 3-chome 2-45

    Oita Pref. Oitashi Danoharu 587-1

Oita Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
