  • Sentoji Temple Ruins

    Oita Kunisaki-shi Kunimimachi Sendo
    Records state that this ruined temple, a 50-minute drive from the Oita Airport, was originally founded amidst the Rokugo Manzan temples by the priest Ninmon, who is also believed to have founded the Rokugo Manzan temples as a whole. A five-meter-tall stone Hokyoin pagoda stands at the entrance to the grounds, while a mid-relief carving of Ninmon can be found on the site of the main temple building, which was destroyed during the Warring States period. A stone paved walking path leads to the back of the grounds, and walkers check out the temple's inner sanctuary; a statue depicting Ninmon entering Nirvana; a group of gorinto five tier gravestones; and the Itsutsuji Fudo, the highest point of the grounds. The area's fall foliage in autumn is beautiful.
  • Ruins of Ankokuji Village Park (Yayoi no Mura)

    In this history park, a 20-minute drive from the Oita Airport, you can experience ancient history, ways of life, and culture through a recreated Yayoi period village. Facilities include recreations of the kind of raised floor dwellings used in the area 1,800 years ago, reconstructed pit dwellings moved to the park, rice paddies, a river, and an open field, and visitors can have fun while learning about ancient culture and lifestyles. Visitors can also try starting a fire like people did in ancient times, and make an ancient magatama comma-shaped stone jewel. The park's hands on learning-based history museum displays materials used to build homes and Ankokuji-style pottery excavated in the area, and restored ancient tools.
  • Hiji Castle Ruins

    A five-minute walk from JR Yokoku Station, these are the ruins of a castle which belonged to the Kinoshita clan, the hereditary rulers of the bygone Hiji Domain. The castle was built in 1602 by the first Kinoshita lord of Hiji Domain, Kinoshita Nobutoshi. The castle's inner citadel consisted of the castle donjon and turrets scattered about, and this in turn was surrounded by three tiers of defenses - an outer citadel, a further outermost citadel, and an outer wall. Today, only the castle's stone base and ruined moat remain; the surrounding area is maintained as a park. The view of Beppu Bay and Mt. Takasaki visible from the castle ruins is counted as one of the beautiful Eight Views of Beppu, as well as one of the 100 Views of Oita. The sea beneath the inner citadel is known as a habitat for the area's famous brand name Shiroshita Karei marbled sole fish.
  • Kamezuka Kofun Ancient Tomb Park and Amabe Ancient Tomb Museum

    This park and museum, a 15-minute drive from the Oita-Miyagawauchi Interchange on the Higashikyushu Expressway, were built around the Kamezuka Kofun Ancient Tomb, a keyhole-shaped tumulus constructed in the early Kofun period (between the end of the fourth century and the beginning of the fifth century) which is the largest of its kind in the prefecture. The museum consists of seven general zones and displays artefacts excavated from the tomb while also presenting information on the culture of kofun tombs through the use of large dioramas and model reconstructions. The museum also displays the actual Onose Sarcophagus, a prefecturally-designated Tangible Cultural Property; and reproductions of period ironware. In addition, there's a mini theater and video and information space, enabling visitors to learn more via computers and images.
  • Christian Cave Bethel

    This place of worship, a 15-minute walk from JR Bungo-Taketa Station, is one of only a few of its kind in the world and is carved out of tuff rock behind the samurai residences of Tono-machi. Consisting of a domed altar area inside, the bethel has five carved windows and a carved roof; it is believed there was a worship space in the front and an adjoining space where the priest lived in secret. It is said that there were many Christian believers in Taketa and Kusami due to the influence of fervent Christian Shiga Chikatsugu, who was lord of Oka Castle at the end of the Warring States period. After Christianity was prohibited in the country, this cave was used by Christians to worship in secret.

    This Buddhist temple, a 10-minute walk from JR Bungo-Taketa Station, was built as the main temple building of the Ganjoin Temple in 1635. The temple stands on the right side of a long set of stairs which passes in front of stone statues of the 16 arhats. The oldest extant wooden structure in Taketa City, it has been designated a National Important Cultural Property. Built with a tented roof by master Hida carpenters, carvings of demons and human faces can be found at the four corners under the roof's eaves. The temple enshrines a statue of Ragaraja, the principal object of worship, which is said to grant worshipers fulfillment in finding love. According to legend, your wish will be fulfilled if you walk around the temple counterclockwise three times and then pray.
  • Kannon-ji Temple Juroku Rakan Stone Statues

    "A 10-minute walk from JR Bungo Taketa Station, this temple was built in 1618 by Nakagawa, the feudal lord of the time, as a place of prayer. 16 stone arhats, or ""Sixteen Arhats,"" are enshrined on natural stones piled up on the right side of the stone steps leading to the temple grounds. At the top of the stone steps is Aizendo, the main hall of Ganjoin Temple, which is famous for its prayers for the fulfillment of love."

    This historic structure is right next to the Shokokai-mae bus stop and Yakuba-mae bus stop and can also be reached by taking a left on the road in front of the Nakatsu City Yamakuni Community Center; it will be visible on your left. The former residence has also been designated a National Important Cultural Property. Built in 1771, the structure is viewed as the oldest extant Japanese home in the Kyushu region whose date of construction is known. Originally belonging to a family whose members served as leaders of a group in the Edo period, those interested in viewing the residence must first receive permission from the current owner. The cost to view the residence, however, is free. Built with a curving hipped roof, the residence also has a stable.
  • Hita Lumber Museum

    As its name states, this extremely unusual museum focuses on lumber, specifically Hita cedar, and has exhibits on the local forestry and lumber industries. The museum itself is built with large, cross sectional cut laminated lumber. Huge cedar trees estimated to be 300 to 400 years old are displayed lying horizontally in the museum, as well as lumbering tools once used in the area. In addition, the museum displays chronological tables and photos which show how lumber used to be transported, such as via floating rafts.

    This research institution belongs to the Agricultural Research Division of the Oita Prefectural Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries Research and Guidance Center, an administrative body of the prefectural government. The facility primarily engages in providing superior plant varieties and technical guidance to flower farmers in Oita Prefecture. However, its botanical garden, planted with decorative cultivars; and its greenhouse, in which are displayed tropical and subtropical plants, are open to the general public and may be freely visited during operating hours.
  • Kakaji Betsugu Hachimansha

    This Shinto shrine stands in the middle of a residential neighborhood and is one of five subordinate shrines under Usa-jingu Shrine, which was established on the Kunisaki Peninsula during the Yoro era (717-724). Today, the shrine is known as the largest of the four extant Usa-jingu subordinate shrines. A beautiful stone arch bridge called Shiomi Bridge spans the approach to the shrine and has been designated a Tangible Cultural Property by the prefecture. The shrine's magnificent two-story gate, believed to have been built in the late Edo period, is also a stunning sight. In addition, the shrine is famous for the Onbare, a festival held on July 29 and 30 to pray for bountiful harvests.
  • Fukoji Temple Cliff-Carved Budda

    "This Buddhist rock carving is located on the grounds of the Fukoji Temple, an ancient Koyasan Shingon Buddhist temple. The statue is carved within an alcove. Consisting of an 11-meter-tall figure of Acala flanked by his servants Kimkara and Cetaka, it is one of the largest carvings of its kind in the country. Believed to date to the Kamakura period, it has been designated a Historic Site by Oita Prefecture. There are two additional alcoves nearby - one is a small shrine dedicated to Vairocana containing several other Buddhist images; the other is a homa ritual hall called the Nagekomido which contains a depiction of Vaisravana. The temple is also known as the ""Hydrangea Temple"" and visitors are encouraged to come between late June and early July when some 2,000 bigleaf hydrangea plants come into bloom on the grounds."

    This automotive museum is located in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture. Inside a retro building, the museum preserves and displays vehicles from Japan, the United States, and Europe made between the beginning of the 20th century and the 1970s. The Showa Retro Corner area is particularly popular with older museum goers and contains vehicles of the same make and model as ones which famously appeared in Showa period (1926-1989) movies and television shows. The museum's shop displays over 1,000 rare miniature cars and sells Tomica and tin plate toys.

    由布院駅から徒歩20分ほど。駅前通りから分岐する参宮通りに大鳥居が立つ。 82年(景行天皇12年)創建。祭神は国常立尊、国狭槌尊、彦火火出見尊、彦波瀲武鸕鷀草葺不合尊、神倭磐余彦尊、神渟名川耳尊。6柱の神を祀ることから「六所宮」とも呼ばれる。池の石組みの上にある社殿は木造銅板葺きで本殿の柱は朱塗り。境内には1991年の台風で倒れた大杉の切株が安置されている。

    由布院駅から徒歩15分ほど。 康保年間(964-968年)創建の臨済宗妙心寺派の寺院。本尊は由布霊山観世音菩薩(秘仏-33年に一度開帳)。宇奈岐日女神社の旧別当。茅葺屋根の山門は元禄時代(1688-1704年)の建立で湯布院最古の木造建築。本堂・観音堂・庫裡は1994年の火災で焼失し、1997年に再建。境内のあちこちに苔生した石仏が佇んでいた。

    門から中に入ると藩校跡の石碑と復元建物である藩校模型学習館があります。八畳の和室にはテーブルがあるだけで他には何もなく非常にシンプルなものですが、何故か惹かれるものがある。また杵築城下町の模型がありました。ちなみにこの藩校の門にある建物隣にはトイレがあり、案内板にはトイレの昔の呼び名である「厠」と表現されている。無料施設なのでついでに立ち寄るのもいいと思います。

    奥まった所で車でナビをしても少し分かりにくかったです。 無料の駐車場は30台以上ありそうでした。 参道から歩いて行くと大きな御神木が2本ありその間をすり抜けて入ると儀式の様な気分がして面白かったです。 小さいカフェもあり良かったです。
