For over a thousand years, the gasses, hot mud, and boiling waters erupting from beneath the area from Kanawa to Kamegawa have led it to being called the Jigoku (Hells) of Beppu. In 2009, four hot springs, Umi (Sea) Jigoku, Chinoike (Blood Pond) Jigoku, Tatsumaki Jigoku, and Shiraike (White Pond) Jigoku were designated as National Places of Scenic Beauty. Visiting these four hot springs in addition to three other famous ones is fun and enjoyable. In addition to hot spring eggs (slow boiled in hot spring waters), hell-themed souvenirs such as Chinoike ointment, and Enman no Yu (bath salts) are popular to take home and give to friends. A 15-minute drive by car from JR Beppu Station.

We did the beppu hells as a day trip from Fukuoka. Public transport was easy enough to navigate. The first 2 hells were underwhelming and their aquarium and crocodile displays were, in my opinion...

Umi Jigoku boasts of being the largest among the Beppu Jigoku hot springs. The beautiful cobalt blue color is due to iron sulphate in the hot spring water. Royal water lilies and tropical water lilies are cultivated using the heat from the hot spring and the flowers will be at their best from early May until early November. At the Bon Festival event, lower grade elementary school children (up to 20 kilograms) can get on the leaves of the royal water lilies that float in the pond. There is also a footbath. The hot spring has been designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.

The large and main place of hell jigoku have many interesting place in here. If you have less time around here. This place in the one that you must select.

In 1923, for the first time in Japan, the breeding of crocodiles was started which used the heat from a hot spring—the place is also referred to as “Crocodile Hell”. There are a number of crocodile breeding areas surrounding the Jigoku pond, and the number of crocodiles kept there is roughly 70. At the weekend, there is also an event where a member of staff gives food to the crocodiles, so you can observe the exciting moment when the crocodiles are fed.

The higehest temperature onsen was occuppied by the stream and surrounding by crocodiles. There are many crocodiles farming here live with the onsen.

The name comes from when they used the steam of the spring water to cook rice as an offering on the occasion of the grand festival of the shrine god, Kamado Hachimangu Shrine. There are six types of hot spring on the grounds and as each have different characteristics such as color, etc. they have been classified into ranks from one to six to make them user friendly. Experience-based facilities are also a feature of this hot spring, such as the demonstrations to increase steam, the high temperature throat and skin steam and the foot bath.

Shiraike Jigoku (White Pond Hell) is characterized by white water with a slight bluish tinge. It is clear when it gushes out, but when it comes into the pond, it changes color to this white color due to the drop in temperature and pressure. The pond is surrounded by a Japanese garden and a statue of Ippen Shonin (monk Ippen), who is said to have laid the foundation of Beppu hot spring resort. The tropical fish Aquaqrium using hot spring energy at the back of the site, which was renovated in 2019, houses and exhibits about 20 species of tropical fish, including pirarucu, piranha, and Asian arowanas that live in the Amazon, as well as alligator gars, an invasive alien species. It is designated as a National Site of Scenic Beauty.

This volcano is located on the western side of Mt. Tsurumi. Made up of Higashi-mine and the 1,583 meter-high Nishi-mine, it is called Echigo Fuji because of its conical shape. The mountain climbing road has the most climbers, there are three parking lots (central, west and east trailheads), and it is possible to go around the edge of the crater near the summit on the Ohachi Meguri route. In addition, chosen as one of Japan's new 100 famous mountains, you can also see Mt. Hiko on the border of Oita and Fukuoka prefectures and Mt. Unzen in Nagasaki when there is good weather.

A facility adjoining Chinoike Jigoku, designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty, situated along Prefectural Route 218 in Noda, Beppu City. Meaning “Pond of Blood Hell,” this natural “jigoku” (“hell”) hot spring is the oldest in Japan and is notable for its waters dyed a deep red by the red thermal mud deep underground. This hot spring also makes up one of the seven Hells of Beppu. The ticket office is adjoined by a shop and a restaurant serving local dishes and meals like “Hell’s Paradise Curry” and the “Blood Pond Burger.”
JR Yufuin Station Footbath

This footbath is located on platform 1 of JR Yufuin Station, a station which has a distinctive atrium lobby. Visitors can purchase a special footbath usage ticket at the station window in order to make use of the bath without having to purchase a train ticket. Ticket purchase also includes a towel, making it easy to come here without any advance preparation. The towel also has an original logo design and will be a memento of your trip. There's an area where you can rinse your feet with clean water, as well as a women-only changing area. "A one-minute walk from the Umi Jigoku-mae bus stop and a 10-minute drive from Kamegawa Station and Beppu Station. This day-use hot spring bathing facility is located inside the Oniishi Bozu Jigoku, a popular and historic sightseeing destination which is even mentioned in the ""Bungo no kuni fudoki,"" a regional historical chronicle compiled in 733. The waters of the bathhouse' salt spring are said to be highly moisturizing and promote warmth retention in addition to treating such ailments as nerve pain, muscle soreness, and chronic digestive diseases. The recommended course is for visitors to bath here after bathing in the waters of Myoban Onsen to enjoy their full health benefits. Be aware that bathing here is contraindicated for those with certain conditions such as those who are pregnant or who have an acute illness. The bathhouse has indoor bathing areas, outdoor baths, scenic overlook baths, and five private reservable family baths. The bathhouse also sells ""hell's"" pudding and eggs cooked using the natural volcanic steam in the area."

A walking and hiking destination located in Yutsubosujiyu, Kokonoe Town, Kusu County. Komatsu Jigoku evokes visions of “jigoku” or “hell” due to the area’s natural steam vents, bubbling mud, and rocks died red from hot spring minerals, and visitors can use walking paths to stroll through the area and take in its distinctive scenic beauty. Visitors can also use a basket to soak raw eggs in the water of hot spring and make “hot spring eggs,” custard like soft boiled eggs.

A facility which makes and sells Yakuyo Yunohana medicinal hot spring bath minerals situated along National Route 500 in the Myoban Onsen hot spring district in Beppu City. Making use of a traditional production method designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, the facility produces naturally derived Yakuyo Yunohana medicinal hot spring mineral salts for home bathing use.
