    Oita Pref. Kitsukishi Kitsuki 665-429
A long-standing restaurant established in the early Edo period and located in Kitsuki, Kitsuki City. The restaurant is famous for its “Ureshino” sea bream chazuke (sea bream on rice covered in tea) made with Kitsuki tea and sea bream marinated in a sesame sauce crafted according to a secret family recipe. The dish derived its name from a phrase from a former lord of Kitsuki. It is said that he murmured “ureshii noo” (“I am happy”) upon eating sea bream chazuke. The flavor of this tasty dish has been passed down unchanged for generations.

    Oita Taketa-shi Taketamachi 284
"This restaurant, a six-minute walk from JR Bungo-Taketa Station, primarily serves dishes made with seafood from the seas of Oita and vegetables from Taketa. Located in a part of the city which once flourished as the veritable pantry of the town beneath Oka Castle and which was once known as ""Fish Town"", the restaurant is famous for its ""atama ryori,"" a local dish born out of the necessity of life lived here far from the sea. Atama ryori involves boiling the head of a fish as well as its stomach, air bladder, liver, intestines, and lips and eating it with a sanbaizu sauce (equal parts vinegar, soy sauce, and mirin). An advance reservation is required to enjoy the restaurant's atama ryori. The establishment's whole enoha landlocked masu salmon sushi and its kabosu soba noodles are also popular, as is its brown rice soft-serve ice cream, which is sold at the front of the restaurant."

Oita Taketa-shi Naoirimachi Nagayu 2961 Kajika Iori
This Japanese restaurant adjoins the Kajikaan hot spring inn visible on the left-hand side after crossing the Seri River from the Nagayuyamawakisansaro Intersection. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the restaurant serves natural cuisine for inn guests, steaks and yakiniku Japanese-style grill-it-yourself barbecue, meal plans which include hot spring bathhouse access, and a variety of course meals. The restaurant is also open to non-guests. The restaurant's local cuisine is made with seasonal, local ingredients, such as Oita-raised Japanese Wagyu beef, eel, and enoha landlocked masu salmon. The restaurant's Toriawase Gozen chicken meal is the most popular choice on the menu and comes with such well-known Nagayu dishes and Oita flavors as toriten chicken tempura and dangojiru dumpling soup.

    Oita Beppushi-shi Kannawakami 3 Kumi
"At this facility located on the grounds of the Daikokuya hot spring inn located near the Kannawa Steam Bath, you can enjoy ""hell steamed"" cuisine cooked using a special steamer which harnesses the heat of the area's hot spring steam. Inn guests can use the facility for free, but non-guests can also use it for a small fee. You can purchase chicken wings and other foods provided on-site, but many customers bring their own food purchased from a nearby supermarket. Customers are provided with wicker steaming baskets to use for cooking. ""Hell steaming"" concentrates the innate flavors of the foods and is a style of cooking unique to Beppu which is highly popular with tourists."

    Oita Bungotakada-shi Kakaji 3990-1
This Japanese restaurant, a 20-minute drive from Usa Station, is in front and just a little to the right of the Kakaji Post Office. Here you can savor cuisine primarily made with local seafood. The Misaki Kakiage-don rice bowl is particularly recommended and is topped with southern rough shrimp tempura and a special sauce. All of the restaurant's octopus dishes are made only using live octopus. This famous establishment is a favorite of local residents. From August through December, customers can also enjoy cuisine made with Oita's brand name cape swimming crab. The restaurant's lunch set meal, only served for an hour and a half-long period around lunch, is also highly regarded. The restaurant also offers toriten chicken tempura set meals and other set meals.

Oita Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
