Chibusan Ancient Tomb is a 44-meter-long keyhole-shaped hill tomb believed to have been built in the first half of the sixth century. The tomb's colorful geometric wall paintings convey the culture and customs of a people from 1,500 years ago to modern generations. Because of its excellent state of preservation, it is one of the best examples of a decorated ancient tomb not only in Kumamoto but all of Japan, and was designated a National Historic Site in 1922. Obusan Ancient Tomb, located 200 meters northwest of Chibusan Ancient Tomb, is a round burial mound four meters tall and 22 meters in diameter with protruding arms. A night tour of the tombs is held every fourth Saturday of the month; participants put on a helmet, grab a flashlight, and get to feel like a real explorer.
