    This historic park is located on the site of Kikuchi Castle in Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture. With features like its restored octagonal drum tower, it's been designated a National Historic Site, drawing castle lovers from near and far. The Onkososeikan facility provides opportunities to learn about the castle's history, featuring video descriptions and full-sized replicas of terracotta warriors. Climb the observatory for a view of the grounds or stop by their souvenir shop.

    This bronze statue the founder of Kumamoto Castle, Kato Kiyomasa, is located in Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. He's depicted in armor and traditional headgear sitting on a castle fortification. Behind the statue is a road called Miyukizaka that leads to Kumamoto Castle. There is another statue of Kiyomasa at Honmyoji Temple in the city's Nishi Ward.

    This hot spring hotel is in Kumamoto Prefecture's Kamimashiki County. Its natural alkaline simple spring is said to help alleviate muscle soreness and nerve pain. It has a spacious indoor bath, a sauna, and an open-air bath surrounded by nature. There's also a bath equipped for seniors and the physically challenged that's available with a reservation. They welcome visitors who stop by just to use the baths.

    This Jizo/Kshitigarbha statue stands in a corner of Tsuetate Onsen, once considered the retreat of Kyushu. There are three bridges in the hot spring district spanning the Tsuetate River, and Jizo statues stand at each which are each said to grant wishes. This particular statues stands at the base of Tsuetate Bridge and is said to grant luck in finding love. Together with a Jizo said to protect the growth of children and a Jizo said to protect health, many tourists make sure to visit all three statues.

    Chibusan Ancient Tomb is a 44-meter-long keyhole-shaped hill tomb believed to have been built in the first half of the sixth century. The tomb's colorful geometric wall paintings convey the culture and customs of a people from 1,500 years ago to modern generations. Because of its excellent state of preservation, it is one of the best examples of a decorated ancient tomb not only in Kumamoto but all of Japan, and was designated a National Historic Site in 1922. Obusan Ancient Tomb, located 200 meters northwest of Chibusan Ancient Tomb, is a round burial mound four meters tall and 22 meters in diameter with protruding arms. A night tour of the tombs is held every fourth Saturday of the month; participants put on a helmet, grab a flashlight, and get to feel like a real explorer.

    An automaton clock in front of JR Hitoyoshi Station. With a two-level, three-story white plaster keep modeled after Hitoyoshi Castle, its movements depict the lord of Hitoyoshi Castle touring the castle town. The lighthearted melody is taken from a popular folk song of the Kuma region. A total of 17 dolls appear along with the music, including the castle's lord, a village headman, a Sagara maiden, and a group performing the Usudaiko Dance, a Kumamoto Prefecture Intangible Cultural Property. It runs every hour from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (5 p.m. in winter). The clock's stone wall even features a reproduction of one of Hitoyoshi Castle's distinctive architectural features.

    The site of a house where a descendant of Sugawara no Michizane, deified as a god of learning, is said to have lived. The thatched roof building on Prefectural Route 52 has a deeply historic ambiance. The Momiki area was ruled by the younger brother of a man named Soza Taro. The house visitors see today was built about 200 years ago. Events like formal tea parties are held there annually.

    熊本地震のあとしばらく公開が中止になっていましたが、公開されていることがわかり訪問しました。熊本駅からバスに乗って来ました。熊大前を通るバスはそこそこあるので不便は感じませんでした。熊大の赤煉瓦の門から入ると案内表示とキャンパス内の地図もあるので場所はすぐにわかりました。守衛の方がいて、入場は無料でした。建物と展示はナンバースクールの時代を彷彿させてくれ貴重な見学でした。五高関係者として夏目漱石の...
