"This historic Soto sect Zen Buddhist temple is the ninth stop on the Higo pilgrimage to 33 sites sacred to the bodhisattva Kannon. Also known as the Ghost Temple, it has a hanging scroll depicting a ghost from a temple legend that has been passed down since ancient times. The pond behind the main hall is where the ghost was said to have appeared. They have a popular Ghost Festival every August, where for one night only they open a ""Ghost House"" and various festival stands set up shop."

This ancient Buddhist temple is known as the birthplace of Koen, the master of Honen, founder of the Jodo school of Buddhism. Its colorful five-story wooden pagoda and the Great South Gate are well known. The temple was burned during battle in 1582 but was restored by the priest Zeshin Kawahara in 1929. A two-storied pagoda was rebuilt in 2018.

    行事ごとや初詣などの時にはたくさんの参拝客の姿がありますが、私が行った時にはとても静かな場所でゆっくりと自然を感じながら参拝することができました。

    Kumamoto Amakusa-shi Hondomachi Hontobaba 1148
"Amakusa's first Zen Buddhist temple was founded in 1645. The temple tells about the history of Amakusa Christians. After the Amakusa Shimabara Rebellion, it was built to help settle the minds of the confused islanders and convert Christians to Buddhism. The main gate is sometimes called the Amakusa-no-Yomeimon. The writing on is plaque refers to ""spreading the teachings of Buddhism and defeating the heresy of the sect of Jesus."" In addition, the stone stairs on the approach to the temple are carved with crosses; as with fumi-e paintings (where suspected Christians were forced to step on sacred images to show they weren't believers) people would have to step on the crosses as they walked to the temple. A Koyasu Kannon statue on the grounds recalls Mary; a statue of the Bodhisattva Jizo, commonly called the ""Foreigner Jizo,"" is clearly Caucasian."

It is a Zen temple in Amakusa, which was built after Amakusa Uprising to reactivate Buddhism. The main gate, which stands at the end of a long path, is very imposing. As the temple is on the top of...

    Kumamoto Hitoyoshi-shi Ganjojimachi 956
The family temple of the Sagara clan, which ruled Hitoyoshi for about 700 years between the Kamakura period and the Meiji Restoration. It was founded in 1233 by the first lord of Hitoyoshi Castle, Sagara Nagayori. During the Edo period, it was the highest-ranking temple in the province, and various temples throughout the Hitoyoshi-Kuma area were under its jurisdiction. It houses many temple treasures, including Buddhist scriptures and images like a seated wooden statue of Amida Nyorai, the principal object of worship and an Important Cultural Property. The Sagara clan's cemetery behind the main temple has numerous gorinto funerary pagodas and other objects and is an impressive example of a resting place for feudal lords.

Kumamoto Hitoyoshi-shi Shimoharadamachi Nishi Kado 2348
A temple founded in 1417 belonging to the Soto school of Zen Buddhism. Up the approach from the huge hollowed out stone that serves as the main temple gate, there is an area with spring water and an arched stone bridge that's said to be the oldest of its kind in the Kuma region. In the main temple's attic, you can view a stone plate print of the sixteen disciples of Buddha who attained Nirvana and a hanging scroll of the ten kings of the Buddhist hell. In early April, 500-year old Hall crabapple trees come into bloom, dyeing the temple precincts a pale pink.

This ancient Buddhist temple was founded in 1578. According to records, the temple's magnificent, history-leaden Sakuramon gate was built some 400 years ago with lumber leftover from the construction of Kumamoto Castle and was later used as a field hospital for the Satsuma army during the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877. 奥にある霊廟はきれいに整備され、献花がしっかりなされている。間口が細長く狭い作りは、加藤清正の時代に敵の攻撃を防ぐ為。この周りはとにかくお寺が多く、一丁一寺の制度が残っている。

Kumamoto lies in the center of Kyushu, a calm prefecture perfect for easy strolls around the historic center and lazy evenings in the natural hot springs at Kurokawa Onsen.
