    Featuring air thick with the smell of sulfur and white steam bursting from underground, Unzen Jigoku (Unzen Hell) really lives up to its name. It is known as a place where Christians were once tortured to death, and there are monuments dedicated to their martyrdom. Some of the attractions include the “Unzen Jigoku Steaming Footbath,” where visitors can experience the sensation of geothermal heat and steam, and the “Unzen Jigoku Workshop,” which sells eggs with an interesting effect: “Eat one, and you live a year longer. Eat two, and you live two years longer. Eat three, and you live long until you die.” In the fall, over 2,000 of these eggs are sold every day, making them quite the hot item indeed.

    It is main reason why one has to go to Unzen. You may need 2 to 3 hours to get around the whole place. Wearing a pair of comfortable shoes is recommended.

    There is a 100 meter long waterway in the Shinmachi neighborhood, under which an abundance of spring water flows; filled with gracefully swimming carp, it is nicknamed the “City of Swimming Carp.” Colorful carp were first released into the waterway in 1978 with the aim of promoting curiosity and joy among children and today it has become a symbol of Shimabara, a city renowned for its spring water.

    This is the terminal for the Ariake Ferry that goes the approximately 45-minute route from Hijikuroko, Kunimi-cho, Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture to Nagasu Town, Tamana County, Kumamoto Prefecture on the Ariake Sea. It has facilities including a boat-shaped hall, observation deck to see the Ariake Sea, souvenir shops, and a snack corner offering udon noodles.

    This spring-fed area is located in Hori-machi, Shimabara City. Shimabara has long been known as a land rich with spring water, and there are over 50 spring-fed areas just within Shimabara City of the Shimabara Springs Group. At Shinwa no Izumi, both Shimabara spring water and Shimabara onsen spring up, and many people come to draw water to drink at home.
