This National Historic Site-designated ancient burial mound is a 15-minute drive from Gounoura Port and is situated between the Yurihata Tumuli and the Soroku Tomb. Of the around 450 ancient burial mounds in Nagasaki Prefecture, over half are found on Iki, and this one is one of the largest. Situated on an 85-meter-high hill, the mound is notable for its two-tier construction, which consists of the tumulus itself built on top of a foundation. A sarcophagus constructed of stone panels aligned together lies in the burial chamber. The 162 artifacts which were found in the tomb have been designated Important Cultural Properties. The ancient burial mounds of Iki, including this tomb, as well as the artefacts excavated from them have also received Japan Heritage designation.

This National Historic Site-designated ancient burial mound, a 15-minute drive from Gounoura Port, is located directly south of the Yurihata Tumuli and Sasazuka Kofun Group. There is parking nearby, and from here the tomb can be reached in about five minutes on foot. Situated on a 100-meter-high hill, the keyhole-shaped burial mound is 91 meters long and is one of the largest in the prefecture. In addition, in one of its two stone chambers, an engraved line drawing of a gondola-like boat can be seen. Numerous artefacts, including Chinese Northern Qi Dynasty two color ceramics, were discovered in the tomb. The artefacts which were found in this tomb as well as the other burial mounds on Iki have received Japan Heritage designation.

Nagasaki Areas

around-area-map

This hidden corner of the country is rural Japan at its best, where underground activity is to thank for active volcanoes and bubbling natural hot springs along the Shimabara Peninsula as well as the crystal clear waters of the Goto Islands off the west coast. Less well known than Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park, Nagasaki commemorates its own past at the Nagasaki Peace Park, which sits alongside the charming Meganebashi stone bridge and a mix of religious buildings with beautiful architecture, such as the Zen Buddhist Sofukuji Temple, the Confucian Shrine, and the Oura Christian Church.
