    Shimabara Castle is located at the foot of Mt. Unzen overlooking the Ariake Sea. The castle is comprised of a five-tier tower surrounded by turrets of various sizes and incorporates the castle architectural style of the Azuchi-Momyama period. The castle is distinguished by its tall and strong walls. After it was completed in 1624, the castle served as the seat of 19 generations of feudal lords from four clans over a 250-year history and was the stage for many historical events. The castle was demolished with the Meiji Restoration but the tower was restored in 1964. The interior of the castle is a museum which exhibits materials related to the early Japanese Christians and other local history matters.

    This was the residential castle of the Matsura clan, the feudal lords of the Hirado Domain. The fortification technology at the time incorporated the unusual Yamagaryu (Yamaga school) style. Construction originally began in 1599 as “Hi-no-Takejo” but as it neared completion in 1613, it fell under suspicion from Tokugawa Ieyasu due to the deep friendship the clan had with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, so the clan head Shigenobu burned down the castle himself. The clan lived in the palace that was on the site for about 90 years, and reconstruction of Hirado Castle began in 1704 and was completed in 1718. The view of the Port of Hirado looking down from the castle keep is outstanding, and visitors can obtain a view that includes the virgin forest of Kuroko Island (a Natural Monument) and the Hirado Ohashi Bridge.

    お城は今は五島高校です。この高校に通ってる彼らにその意識があるかどうかはわからないが。学校を囲む塀は石垣で 元はお城。お堀を超えての通学 石垣の脇のランニング。とても贅沢な環境に思えるのだが 小学生はまだしも此処に通う高校生も 自然に見ず知らずの観光客に挨拶する姿を見て 何らかの影響があるのかなと思ったりもする。

    Hara Castle was the site of the end of the Shimabara Rebellion. Naturally fortified by the surrounding Ariake Sea, the castle was once considered impregnable. The Shimabara Rebellion was led by Amakusa Shiro, who barricaded himself inside the castle with tens of thousands of locals for 88 days until they were wiped out completely. Countless human bones and crosses have been excavated here, attesting to the tragedy which occurred at the site.

    "The site of a ruined castle located in Bo, Kitaarima-cho, Minamishimabara City. The site makes up part of the ""Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region"" World Heritage listing. The castle belonged to the Arima clan, who ruled over the Shimabara Peninsula. Arima Harunobu, one of the lords of the clan, was baptized in 1580, donating land to the Jesuits and supporting Portuguese Jesuit missionaries after they were banished from the area. The castle was abandoned in the early Edo period; today, only the stone base and walls still stand."

    These ancient castle ruins are located in Kurose, Mitsushima-cho, Tsushima City. After the Battle of Hakusukinoe in 663 when Baekje and Japan fought against the allied forces of the Tang and Silla, Kaneda Castle was built to protect against further attacks by the Tang and Silla, and soldiers monitored the border. In addition, for approximately 1,200 years since, a fortress had been placed there by the former army even before the Russo-Japanese War. A valuable historical site with ancient and modern fortress ruins, it is a nationally-designated special historic site.
