    梨の季節、名産地の伊万里を訪ねました。 そのあとにランチ。伊万里だったら“ここでしょう”と意見が一致。 13時頃に行きましたが、 相変わらず多くて15分程待ちました。 “ときそば”¥837おろし蕎麦をいただきました。 友人は“玉子丼”。 蕎麦は細く、味はまずまずでした。 日曜日だからなのか、ファミリーが多かったです。 お座敷とテーブル席と選べます。 駐車場もあります。

    A Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of sweets, Tajimamori-no-mikoto. The shrine was built in the late 7th century during the era of Empress Suiko. The name originated with the grave of Tajimamori, which floated like an island in a pond at Emperor Suinin's imperial tomb. It was designated as a National Treasure in 1912, and is now a national Important Cultural Property.

    A yakiniku Japanese barbecue restaurant where you can casually enjoy delicious Saga beef with fine marbling. It has table seating, private rooms, and horigotatsu seating (low tables with a recess beneath where you can extend your legs). The large window looks out on a courtyard and pond, and the view is especially beautiful in fall when the leaves turn color. Its many recommendable items include their Hagakure assorted beef platter, salted beef tongue, and stone-roasted bibimbab with Kamura special miso. Private rooms need to be reserved.

    A Western-style sweet shop started by a pastry chef who was enchanted by Arita. This is the only French confectionery shop in a town that's known for its grilled food. The shop is dedicated to using local ingredients, and their original cake with fresh ingredients is popular. Fine items that come recommended include their Arita Baked Custard and Arita Ware Cake, Western sweets in hand painted Arita ware containers.

    初めて行った際に番人気というラムレザンとシュークリームを購入した。 しかし、ラムレザンは賞味期限が1週間以上切れており、シュークリームには小さなカビが着いていた。 楽しみにしていただけにガッカリした。

    About 400 years ago, Ri Sampei discovered the ore used for Arita ware porcelain and laid the foundation for its development. This pottery is resurrecting the techniques he developed through repeated trial and error with other potters when he came to Japan from Korea to make porcelain. Using Arita's unique Izumiyama porcelain stone (known as Sanpeido) as a raw material, they make vessels that embrace modern living, as well as pieces with shading and fastening techniques rarely found even among early Imari ware.

They've been certified as purveyors of a nationally Important Intangible Cultural Property. The kiln's pieces are housed in many museums, including the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

    This ginkgo tree at Izumiyama Benzaiten-jinja Shrine is about 40-meters high, 12-meters around at the roots, and has a crown reaching 31-meters east to west. It's about 1,000 years old. It could well be the largest ginkgo tree in Japan. It was designated a national Natural Monument in 1926. Every year from mid to late November, the leaves this enormous tree turn yellow, a brilliant show for the crowds of visitors.

    A monument to Ri Sampei, the founder of Arita ware. He discovered Izumiyama porcelain stone and was the first in Japan to use it in making ceramics. It was erected in 1917 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Arita ware. Lots of tourists visit for the great view of the kilns and merchant houses of the town of Arita. The Toso Festival is held annually on May 4th; currently both Korean and Japanese officials attend.

The boneless fried chicken, the hearty ""Sanzoku momo"" and the crunchy ""Sunazuri karaage"" are all highly recommended."

    Arita's water quality is so high that sake brewers go to great lengths to seek it out. This tofu shop uses it to make godofu, a local Arita specialty. The local favorite Takahashi no Godofu is made from nothing but 100% Saga Prefecture grown Fukuyutaka soybeans and Hokkaido potato starch. Some days it sells out by noon, so it's a good idea to stop in early.
