"A National Historic Site located in Hayatsuetsu Kawasoe-machi, Saga City. The site also makes up part of the UNESCO's World Heritage Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining. Originally built as a shipbuilding training yard by the former Saga Domain in 1858, the site was used for Western style ship naval education and construction. The site contributed significantly to the modernization of Saga Domain at the end of the Edo period, including being used to build Japan's first practical steamship, the ""Ryofu-maru"". In the adjoining ""Tsunetami Sano Memorial Museum"", visitors can view VR exhibits and restored scale models."

A monument with a hair from the Edo-period joruri and kabuki playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon is on the grounds beside the main hall. There is also a tradition that he studied there as a child.

Located around 25 minutes' drive from the Saga Yamato Interchange on the Nagasaki Expressway, the Kodenji Temple is a Buddhist temple belonging to the Soto school of Zen Buddhism that was founded by Nabeshima Kiyofusa, the father of Nabeshima Naoshige, the first lord of the Nabeshima domain. During the lordship of Nabeshima Katsushige, the Nabeshima family donated additional temple buildings and land to the Kodenji Temple, which became the Nabeshima clan's family temple; the commemorative steles and votive lanterns of each successive lord of the Saga domain are neatly arranged within the temple precincts. The temple's Dainehan-zu (Painting of Nirvana) is one of only two such paintings in Japan, and is only put on display once a year, on April 19-20 during the Shakado Ceremony. Kodenji Temple is also famous as a place to view plum blossom; one particular Rose Plum tree called the Reitoku-kotobuki Plum is said to be around 400 years old, and has been designated by the city government as a Natural Monument.
