Castle / Ruins of Castle Spots in Fukuoka Area

  • Kokura Castle
    Travel / Tourism
    Fukuoka Pref. Kitakyushushikokurakitaku Jounai 2-1
This castle was constructed by Hosokawa Tadaoki over a period of seven years starting in 1602. A characteristic of this castle is the large castle keep built in Kara-zukuri style where the fifth floor is larger than the fourth floor, and there are no roof eaves between the fourth floor and fifth floor. The stone walls, in a style known as Nozura-tsumi because they do not use any hewn stone, are a must-see. Inside the castle is a history zone with a diorama that is a model of the castle-town, and the castle keep has an observation zone that offers a 360-degree view of Kokura’s townscape. The castle grounds are a famous spot for hanami cherry blossom viewing parties when the approximately 300 cherry trees are in bloom.

  • Akizuki Castle Ruins (Prefectural Historic Site)
    Travel / Tourism
    Fukuoka Pref. Asakurashi Akidukinotori
"Located around 20 minutes' drive from the Amagi Interchange of the Oita Expressway, Akizuki Castle was constructed during the Sengoku (Warring States) period (1467-1615) as a Hirajiro site (a castle built on flat ground, rather than on a hill) to serve as the residence of the Akizuki family. Only part of the original castle remains today; the site of the demolished castle was used to build Suiyo Shrine, dedicated to Kuroda Nagaoki, the first lord of the Akizuki-Kuroda domain. Kuromon (""Black Gate"") that served as the main gateway to the Castle was relocated to a site on the processional pathway leading up to Suiyo Shrine; the area near the gate is famous for its beautiful autumn foliage. The area in front of the Nagaya-mon Gate-the only part of the castle that survives in its original position-is the venue for Akizuki Nochi no Hina event, held on the day of Chrysanthemum Festival (the 9th day of the 9th lunar month), when around 250 Hina dolls are put on display. Sugi no Baba Street, the road that leads up to the Castle site, features a 500 meter-long avenue of cherry trees."
  • Kurume Castle Ruins
    Travel / Tourism
    Fukuoka Pref. Kurumeshi Sasayamamachi 444
"The site of a castle which once belonged to the Arima, a samurai clan which ruled Kurume Domain for around 250 years during the Edo period. The fortress was also once known as Sasawara (""Bamboo Grass"") Castle or Sasayma Castle. Visitors can still view what remains of the castle's inner citadel. Nearby, visitors can find Sasayama Shrine, a Shinto shrine dedicated to the former domain lord Arima Toyouji; and the Arima Memorial Museum, which displays arms and armor which once belonged to various lords who ruled the area. Yoshino cherries and hill cherries grow on the grounds, and in the spring visitors can enjoy the spectacular scenery their light pink blossoms create."
  • Onojo Fortress Ruins
    Travel / Tourism
    Fukuoka Kasuya-gun Umimachi Dazaifu-shi Onojo-shi
A historic site on Mt. Shiojiyama in the western region of Fukuoka prefecture. After losing the Battle of Hakusukinoe (Baekgang) on the Korean peninsula in 663 CE the Yamato Court built the fortress in 665 CE to defend against an invasion from a coalition of Tang Chinese and Silla Korean forces. The fortress was nearly eight kilometers in length and spread over what is now Umi Town, Dazaifu City, and Onojo City. Remnants of the embankments, stone walls, and buildings have been preserved and designated as a National Special Historic Site as important archeological remains with regards to Japan's ancient history.
