    Kouchi Pref. Muroto-shi Kiragawacho Ko 2200-1
    Kiragawa-cho, Muroto City is a neighborhood that has retained its Meiji era townscape. Lined with merchant houses, storehouses, and other period buildings, it was the first district in Kochi Prefecture to be designated as a National Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The district is notable for its plaster walls, “mizukiri” drainage tiles, and its “ishiguro,” stone masonry outer walls built to protect homes from typhoons.

    The Sadachinka Bridge, a typical “chinka”, or sinking bridge, able to sustain flooding on the lower parts of the Shimanto River, is the longest of the more than 40 so called sinking bridges on the Shimanto River boasting a length of 291.6 meters and a width of 4.2 meters. In order to prevent being washed away during high floods, these submersible bridges were built without railings. Visitors can enjoy the pleasant feeling of the cool breeze as they cross the bridge on foot with many tourists coming to visit throughout the year.

    西土佐道の駅から少し四万十川上流にあります。車で５分かからないと思います。橋には駐車スペースがありませんので注意が必要です。短めの沈下橋なので河原に下りたり渡り切ったり楽しむことが出来ます。

    Standing 18 meters tall on the tip of Cape Ashizuri, this chalk-white lighthouse is one of the largest in Japan, shining 460,000 candelas worth of light. The observation deck offers a breathtaking panoramic 270-degree view. Witnessing the grandeur of the Pacific Ocean from here really makes the curvature of the earth stand out.

    This lighthouse is the symbol of Cape Muroto, which juts out into the deep-blue sea. The contrast between the chalk-white lighthouse and the vast ocean expanse is gorgeous, making it a popular spot for taking in the view. The lens has a diameter of 2.6 meters making it one of the largest in Japan. Every year on the Sundays before and after November 1st, a “Lighthouse Festival” is held and the interior is opened to the public.

    This bridge is in Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture. Designed to submerge when the river rises and to have as little impact on water flow as possible, it stands out for its lack of guard rails. It was built in 1966 and is 120 meters long. The surrounding scenery is particularly lovely, making it the most popular of the 47 “sinking bridges” along the Shimanto River.

    This bridge is located in Katsuma, Shimanto City is one of a number of ''sinking bridges'' designed to sink during high water built along the Shimanto River. The scenery created by the river, its sinking bridges, and the nearby mountains is symbolic of the Shimanto River. This particular 171.4-meter-long, 4.4-meter-wide sinking bridge is notable for its three-legged piers.

    This road offers breathtaking scenery as it snakes for nearly 19 kilometers along the ridges of Yokonami Peninsula, which features a rias coastline. You can enjoy a sweeping view of Uranouchi Bay and the Shikoku Mountains, and the observation deck along the route offers a wonderful view of the Pacific Ocean and inner bay.

    This dam is located in Tsuedamari, Niyodogawa Town, Agawa County. The dam, which was built to prevent flooding along the Niyodo River, was completed in 1986. Visitors can take a tour the dam's control room, interior, and other areas (tours are generally only given on weekdays only and a reservation is required). The area around Lake Sagiri, the dam lake, is equipped with multiple facilities for enjoying nature including open spaces and a scenic park. It also hosts the Lake Sagiri Festival on August 16 each year.

    This observation platform is located on the summit of Godai-san (Mt. Godai) in the eastern part of Kochi City. There are spectacular views of Kochi City, Urado Bay and Kochi Harbor. With 250-degree panoramic views, this is one of the best observation platforms in Kochi Prefecture. It is also popular as a spot to enjoy Kochi City’s nightscape. The observation platform is easily reached by bus from JR Kochi Station.

    A road following Prefectural Route 310 in Susaki City. The about 800-meter-long road follows a stream and has a wlaking path, and in spring visitors can enjoy the area’s avenue of blossoming cherry trees and moss phlox.     This bridge is located in Nishitosaiwama, Shimanto City. The 120-meter-long bridge is one of several sinking bridges along the Shimanto River designed to be submerged when the water rises. It is an especially popular place to take photographs even among the sinking bridges, which have come to become symbolic of the Shimanto River's scenery. The bridge is frequently featured in posters, videos, and other media.

    Out past the western edge of the Tatsukushi Coast within Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park is the only at-sea lookout tower in the Shikoku/Chugoku region. The interior features 60 centimeter-diameter round windows in all directions, providing you with a glimpse at the sea floor seven meters underwater. You can often see colorful coral and tropical fish, as well as migratory fish like sardines and silver-striped herrings in some seasons. The facilities also include a restaurant with a view of Tatsukushi Coast, and a souvenir shop offering local specialty goods, making this a great place for tourists to take a break in the middle of a long drive.

    This walking path traverses the mountains from one of Shikoku’s superb natural ocean vistas to a historic cultural property. Along with this Noneyama Highway, there are 598.9 kilometers walking paths throughout Kochi Prefecture. This 35 kilometer highway starts at Nahari Town via the ridge of the None mountains. This ancient passage has a long history, beginning with the rotation of the provincial governors about 1200 years ago. This route was used as the Daimyo lords' passage to Edo during the feudal government era and also by such independence-fighting samurai, Nakaoka Shintaro's gang, during the Tokugawa Shogunate. This mountain path is dotted with historic sites such as the Ichirizuka and Gorizuka milestones, Yadoya Sugi (cedar tree shaping like a inn), and the stone wall of ruins of residences.

    Just about 50 kilometers east from downtown Kochi City, this beautiful quiet rural Nahari Town surrounded by natural beauty has been major travel hub since ancient times. Preserved throughout in this historic town are residences and traditional structures with the enduring Tosa plaster. This is the location of the “Naha-no-tomari” mentioned in the famous travel diary, Tosa Nikki. This area, which has a long history of being threatened by typhoon and thunderstorms from the ocean. For this reason, a uniquely local architecture of using mizukiri tiles to protect the thick-whitewashed plaster facades from the direct wash of the rain was developed here. Although, no longer the bustling town of yesteryear, one can get a sense of the historic grandeur from the white-washed plastered warehouses that can be seen even along the national highway through town.

    The Teiko Movable Bridge (officially, the Kochiken Teiko Rinkodoro Kado Bridge) at the entrance of Teiko Port was opened in 2002. It's about 32 meters long and takes about six minutes to open and close. You can only travel over it for about seven hours a day at fixed times, and the schedule is subject to change without notice, so be sure to confirm if it's operating before you go.

    Another name for Sagawa Bridge, which spans the Harai River (a small tributary of the Yusuhara River). The reflection of Tsuga Dam on the lake resembles glasses (megane), giving it the name. It was originally a bridge for forestry trains that ran during the period when the industry thrived. It still looks today like it did back then and is one of the prefecture's Modernization Heritages.

    A bridge that's the 80th stop among the 88 Shimanto Riverside Sites; it’s located upstream. Considered the prototype of Shimanto River's bridges designed to be underwater during floods, it consists of three wooden boards that are nine meters long, 60 centimeters wide, and 30 centimeters thick. Such bridges are also known as “low water crossings.” They have played an important role from ages past for travelers crossing the region.

    Kajigamori Prefectural Natural Park is at a magnificent 1,400-meter location with the Ishizuchi Mountain Range to the west, Tsurugi Mountain Range to the east, and the Yoshino River flowing below. The observatory with its 60-centimeter reflecting telescope is attached to the Kajigamori cottage. Reservations are required to use the telescope.

    This is one of three observatories in Usubae, known for being the first place where the Kuroshio current reaches Japan. On the nearby sea surface, you can observe the point where the current collides as it swirls and moves. It is a place where you can experience magnificent scenery, such as a terrain that changes from cliffs and caves created by the rough seas and granite rocks that glow in the dark blue sea.

    栢島の展望台であるが、行く人は限られているらしく展望台下の駐車場まではすれ違い出来ないほどの細い道である。駐車場からは急登を数分歩く。 素晴らしい景色であるが、栢島は若干遠景過ぎる。
