About an eight-minute walk from the Hasuikemachi stop on the electric streetcar, this Japanese-style pub offers the local cuisine of Kochi. The hinoki-wood interior features a counter made from a single plank of zelkova wood, with box seating and tatami seating—perfect for families, friends and event dining. You can enjoy a variety of dishes, like nabe (stew), sushi, grilled food made with fresh ingredients each season—the local bonito and Tosa giraud chicken in particular. The a la carte menu is extensive, as is the course dining. You can even dosome sake taste-testing.

    Kouchi Pref. Kouchishi Minamiharimayachou 1-17-25
A three-minute walk from tram stops Harimayabashi Station. A restaurant for enjoying “good, fresh local cuisine and good sake.” Look for the tasteful store sign. Inside, you’ll find a relaxed atmosphere, with private rooms, counter seating and table seating. Enjoy special Kochi cuisine—with its wellspring of great ingredients, like bonito, moray eel, and whale—a la carte, or try rice bowls and meals-of-the-day made with local Kochi rice for lunch, or try course meals for dinner. There is a full lineup of alcohol too, like nihonshu and shochu, to go with your meal.

30 meters from Chiyoricho-1-chome Station, this confectioner has been dealing in traditional Kochi sweets since 1688. A simple dried confection, kenpi is a traditional sweet inspired by bran and the shirakami-somen given by a purveyor of the Yamauchi clan lord. Also, traditional pickled plums, and new brands of sweets reminiscent of Sakamoto Ryoma and Yamauchi Kazutoyo (who have connections to Tosa), would make great gifts or souvenirs. Other popular items include “Tosa sweet” —a bouchee made with Tosa ingredients—and goat-milk pudding, made with lots of goat milk.

Kochi Aki-gun Toyo Cho Nonehei 1942
This is a historic Japanese confectionery store from the Meiji period. As the oldest confectionery store in None area, this shop has handed down the authentic art of Japanese sweets for approximately 140 years over five generations. The specialty, None manju bun, uses homemade sweet bean paste made by 100% adzuki beans from Tokachi, Hokkaido, and wrapped in the dough blended with a portion of junmai sake, which makes an mildly sweet delicacy. The skin of the manju bun is so thin it gently melts in your mouth to expose the plenty of soft bean paste within. This small delicate manju bun has been enjoyed by many generations and is familiarly beloved. It naturally goes well with tea, and makes a superb souvenir gift.

    Kochi Aki-shi Doi 1017-1
A restaurant tucked away in an idyllic rural area. They offer a variety of items made with local Aki specialties. One of these is chirimen-jako (dried juvenile fish); they offer two types of rice bowls made with this: their regular Kamaage Chirimen Bowl and their Kakiage Chirimen Bowl. The Kakiage Chirimen Bowl is a local specialty, a hearty gem featuring a kakiage fritter made with chirimen-jako and wild vegetables, with even more chirimen-jako layered beneath. Adding condiments such as seaweed, grated radish, and sesame will give it a lighter flavor. The shop also sells souvenirs and specialty products, making it the perfect place to stop while strolling around Doikachu.

Aki is famous for eggplants and chirimen, and you can get your fill of both here. I recommend the chirimendon or the eggplant curry (only available on certain days).

A shop surrounded by forest with its own “vegetable sommelier.” They offer freshly baked pizzas heaped with toppings featuring carefully selected local vegetables. The pizzas are made by the wife of their “vegetable sommelier”—they run out of dough every day, so you know it's always fresh. The vegetables picked fresh that morning are rich in minerals and known for being sweet and delicious. Located next to the Niyodo River, the tranquil shop has a home-made feel. Bring your dog along to dine on the terrace beneath Japanese zelkova trees. The popular shop often gets exposure from customers on social media.

Located in the east-central Kochi, Konan City is a major production center for melons, watermelons, high-sugar tomatoes, and greenhouse grown mandarins. Bursting with natural goodness and fresh fruit flavor—and made every morning—this shop's gelato is a showstopper. Varieties include standbys like milk and chocolate, as well as daily specials with seasonal ingredients. Their gelato waffles and limited-edition sweets are popular too.

A bit out of the way, but really delicious , freshly made gelato. They had about 8 different flavors. The fruity ones looked refreshing but I ended up going for a decadent coffee and chocolate double...

A restaurant with an antique storehouse-like interior that exudes femininity from every corner that’s known as a place of rest and healing. For lunch, their Chirimen Meal Sets with fresh, locally prepared jako (juvenile fish) and Daily Meal Sets come recommended. In the evening it transforms into a Japanese-style pub with carefully selected local sake that tastes great with their fresh appetizers.

A Japanese sweet shop with a history reaching back to 1837. They're famous for their teahouse mochi sweets that got their start during the Edo period when the Yamauchi clan were feudal lords. The sweets features homemade koshian bean paste made from Hokkaido-grown azuki beans inside soft mochi dough made with high-quality domestic mochi rice, giving it an old-fashioned cinnamony taste.

Kochi Areas

around-area-map

The largest of Shikoku’s prefectures, Kochi is endowed with some of the island’s most exceptional sand beaches lining the Pacific Ocean, which narrows into the Shimanto-gawa, a huge river that stretches 196 kilometers into the prefecture, passing verdant mountains and hosting countless riverside activities. Whether you’re a pilgrim or not, Kochi’s 16 Buddhist temples that make up one leg of the Shikoku Pilgrimage are worth a visit, particularly Chikurin-ji for its five-tier pagoda.
