Located in 2-chome, Obiya-machi, Kochi City, Hirome Market is a large food market containing food stalls and other small shops. The large number of food stalls includes places offering local Tosa dishes, as well as a wide range of other cuisine including standard Japanese food, Chinese food, Italian food, Indian food, etc. Diners order their food from the food stalls and then take it to eat in the shared central dining area. There are also shops selling local souvenirs, massage providers, etc., making this a great place for shopping or relaxation. The walkways and eating areas within the Market have been given the names of famous spots in Kochi Prefecture, such as Ryoma Street, O-Joka Square (Castle Town Square), Igosso Lane, etc.

This is funky place with lots of small food stalls selling just about any type of food, from seafood, to meat to noodles, and a bunch of local fried stuff. We have tried 4-5 places and spent about 3...

This souvenir shop is on the bank of the Shimanto River in Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture and contains a restaurant on the second floor. It opened in 1967. The first floor sells processed goods such as natural eel, shrimp, sweetfish, and seaweed from the Shimanto River, which is said to be Japan’s last remaining limpid river. Depending on the season, you may be able to sit outside on the terrace and gaze at the river while you eat.

Tsuzuki Seafood Restaurant serves fresh seafood and regional cuisine in a location about a ten-minute walk from JR Kochi Station near Harimayabashi Bridge. It is said to be the restaurant that invented Yakikiri no Tataki, in which bonito is seared over a fire, seasoned, and then sliced thinly to be eaten while hot. Customers can choose either counter or table service. A selection of the catch of the day is offered at the counter, including thickly-sliced Bonito Tataki, dishes made with octopus, and moray eel. This restaurant is popular not only with tourists but also with local residents. In addition to seafood, Ryukyu Island-style marinated dishes, Tosa-style sushi roll, and other simple local dishes are available, along with local Tosa sake.

About 10 minutes on foot from Tosa-Shinjo Station on the JR Dosan Line, this shop is famous for local Susaki cuisine and nabe-yaki ramen. The unpretentious shop maintains a cozy feel, and you can sit and enjoy steaming hot nabe-yaki ramen at either the counter or the tables/raised seating. The chicken-based stock is a pleasant soy flavor, with thin straight noodles, and completed with chicken, fish cakes, onions, and raw egg. The remaining soup makes great porridge if you add in some rice. Souvenir ramen is also available for purchase.

Famous for Janmen Noodles, with their thick sauce packed with egg, Chinese chives, togarashi pepper, and offal. This restaurant is the birthplace of these noodles which are tasty as is or with rice. The dish has lots of dietary fiber with about 80 grams of Chinese chives in every serving. It's been popular ever since it was developed 15 years ago with the concept of making ramen noodles that go great with rice.

This shop is famous for serving the local “soul food” perayaki, a kind of savory griddle cake. It's like a thin okonomiyaki made with scallions and dried whitebait tempura, and it's topped with Soda-bushi katsuo flakes. There are four flavors of sauce: sweet, normal, spicy, and soy. Prices vary by size. This shop first made pera yaki in 1957. You can sit around a large iron griddle and enjoy it piping hot.

The largest of Shikoku’s prefectures, Kochi is endowed with some of the island’s most exceptional sand beaches lining the Pacific Ocean, which narrows into the Shimanto-gawa, a huge river that stretches 196 kilometers into the prefecture, passing verdant mountains and hosting countless riverside activities.
