This art museum opened in 1993 in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture and is known for its over 1,200 items comprising a global collection of Marc Chagall’s works. There are also many other works of modern and contemporary art on display, as well as art by local artists. The collection-based exhibits regularly rotate works from among its massive collection. The building also includes a hall for the performance arts and a photography center showcasing the works of Kochi-born photographer Yasuhiro Ishimoto. Various exhibitions and workshops are held as well.

We particularly liked the pictures that the artist painted along the Silk Road. His use of vivid colors isa highlight of his work.

Kochi Pref. Konan City Akaokacho 538
This art museum is located in Akaoka-cho, Konan City. It stores the folding screen paintings by the late Edo to early Meiji period painter Ekin (Hirose Kinzo) that are displayed at the Suruda Hachimangu Jinsai festival held on July 14 and 15 each year. One exhibit allows visitors to view the folding screen paintings in the same dark setting as the night of the festival. Another allows visitors to view the paintings through a literal hole in the wall. The museum regularly rotates the paintings that are on display. It also features exhibits about the life of Ekin.

    期待通りの屛風絵です。本物は覗き見で見ること可能な2点だが、複製展示の絵も迫力満点、たしかに“恐ろしく美しい”。2020の絵金祭りは中止と聞きましたが、次回の祭りが楽しみです。

The SEASIDE GALLERY is not hosted in a building. At this museum along the Irino Beach spreading in front of Kuroshio Nakamura Line’s Tosa Irino Station, nature and people as a whole are the “work.” Irino Beach is a vast sandy area about four kilometers long and 200 meters wide that has been chosen as one of Japan’s top beaches for its rich natural landscape. It hosts events like the “T-shirt art exhibition” where about 1,000 T-shirts are hung along the beach, and the “National Seaside Barefoot Marathon” where participants run barefoot across the sand.

    Kochi Aki-shi Doi 953-I
Japan's first calligraphy museum. Located in Doikachu at the site of Aki Castle, its Calligraphy Hall of Fame has received national attention. Calligraphy has been very popular in Aki since the feudal era. During the late Taisho and Showa periods it produced master calligraphers such as Oun Kawatani, the Shotei Brothers, and Yukei Teshima. The museum houses approximately 2,000 pieces of Japanese calligraphy brushed by them and other leading artists. Around 100 works of Chinese characters, the Japanese syllabary, and seal engravings by currently active calligraphers are always on display.

Small museum next to the history museum where you can see some interesting pieces from all over Japan. They sometimes have calligraphy workshops/classes there too. They change up their displays every...

The products are on display in a quaint building built in the Taisho period. Using a paper wholesaler, the shop has a nostalgic, retro atmosphere. They make their zodiac inspired papier-mache every year; the familiar designs were also used on the Japan Post's zodiac stamps. Kochi Areas

around-area-map

The largest of Shikoku’s prefectures, Kochi is endowed with some of the island’s most exceptional sand beaches lining the Pacific Ocean, which narrows into the Shimanto-gawa, a huge river that stretches 196 kilometers into the prefecture, passing verdant mountains and hosting countless riverside activities. Whether you’re a pilgrim or not, Kochi’s 16 Buddhist temples that make up one leg of the Shikoku Pilgrimage are worth a visit, particularly Chikurin-ji for its five-tier pagoda.
