This museum introduces and exhibits items related to the history and folklore of Ehime Prefecture. The expansive structure houses four historic and folklore exhibit rooms, and workshop classrooms. In addition to the displayed objects, on display are many scale-model replicas of iconic structures such as pit dugout dwellings, a town house during the Sengoku Age of Civil Wars, and a pre-war village main street, each depicting respective periods, affording one a sense of being transported back in time.

It’s strange to find such a fine museum on Ehime’s history and culture in a small city like Seiyo rather than Matsuyama city. But it’s in an idyllic setting on top of a mountain. Entry is 510 yen per...

The building was constructed as the main branch of the Oozu Commercial Bank in 1901, and is a blend of Japanese and Western-style architecture, featuring British bricks and a tiled roof. The building is now used to sell local crafts and special products, and there is a place for tourists to take a break on the second floor.

    まちの駅あさもやから地図を片手に歩きました。銀行として使われていた建物です。 文字通りの赤煉瓦の建物できれいです。が、その日は残念ながら休業日。中には入れず残念でした。

    Ehime Pref. Uwajimashi Gotenmachi 9-14
This museum is just a 25-minute walk from the Uwajima Station. It exhibits treasured documents of the region the Date family is associated with, as well as cultural items of Uwajima. Although the exhibit has various artifacts on display, from weapons, armor, paintings, writings, earthenware, and clothes, the exhibit of the splendid and luxurious bride's furnishings is extensive.

The relics were pretty cool to look at, but for me, the best part of the museum was the well written brochure you get explaining the history of the Date (pronounced DAH-TAY, by the way) Family. An...

Other attractions include a museum shop that sells a variety of rice-related products and a blackboard room where visitors can scribble on the walls to their hearts’ content. Visitors can also test their speed and skill in a “floor-wiping race” down the former schoolhouse’s hallway.

Ehime Areas

around-area-map

Stretched across the northwest corner of Shikoku island, Ehime is a nature-rich prefecture boasting beautiful coastlines and a rural center where mountains play host to 26 of the Buddhist temples that make up the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Matsuyama is home to an original post-feudal castle as well as Dogo Onsen, one of the country’s oldest natural hot springs. The northern city of Imabari marks the entrance to the Shimano Kaido, a road that crosses six spectacular bridges and several islands, forming a route between Shikoku and mainland Honshu.
