    Ehime Uwajima-shi Yoshidacho Tsuruma 1503
    This history museum is located in Tsuruma, Yoshida-cho, Uwajima City. A number of historic buildings include surviving samurai residences from the region have been relocated and restored on the grounds of the museum, recreating the townscape during the Edo period. The most notable of these buildings is Hokezuya, the home of the merchant Mitsubiki-Takatsuki Jinjuro, who was the purveyer to the Iyo-Yoshida Domain.

    Often referred to as the Machu Picchu of the East, these plains can be found in the mountains at an altitude of 750 meters. Because the Besshi Mining headquarters were located here from 1916 to 1930, the area has the makings of a town, with company housing, an elementary school, and a reception building. There’s a large brick building still standing as well, and the Tohnal Historical Museum features exhibitions on the culture of the period and the Besshi copper mines.

  • Kawanoe Castle

    This castle located on Mt. Washio (Mt. Shiroyama) in Kawanoe Town was originally a Buddhist temple and is also known as Butsuden Castle. Little remained of the stone gate near the keep in the Showa period (1926-1989), but with the 30th anniversary of Kawanoe City, the castle tower, watchtower, barbican, turrets and fences were reconstructed in its present state. Besides being able to see all over the islands in the Seto Inland Sea from the castle keep, armor and helmets from the Sengoku period (1467-1603 as a rough guide) are also on display. In addition, known as a popular cherry blossom viewing spot, the Sakura Matsuri is held there in the spring.

    This well is located on the grounds of Senyuji Temple in Bessho, Tamagawa-cho, Imabari City. Senyuji Temple is No. 58 of the 88 sacred places on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Legend has it that the well was dug by the noted Kobo Daishi during his establishment of the temples on the Shikoku Pilgrimage to save people suffering from the pain of sickness.

  • Russian Soldiers' Cemetery

    Ehime Matsuyama-shi Miyuki 1-531-2
    This cemetery in Miyuki 1-Chome, Matsuyama City is the final resting place of 97 soldiers of the Russian Empire taken captive during the Russo-Japanese War whose lives ended in Matsuyama. Japan’s first prisoner of war camp was built in Matsuyama in 1904. The camp is said to have held a total of 6,000 prisoners of war. A memorial service is held every year in late March.

  • Akiyama Yoshifuru Monument (Dogo Park Yuzuki Castle Ruins)

    This stone monument is located inside the Dogo Park Yuzuki Castle Ruins, a national historic in Dogokoen, Matsuyama City. Erected to mark the occasion of the enthronement of Emperor Hirohito, the text carved into the monument was based on calligraphy written by Akiyama Yoshifuru. Akiyama’s exploits during the Russo-Japanese War were depicted in Shiba Ryotaro’s historical novel “Saka no Ue no Kumo.” A bronze statue of him also stands in the park.

  • Statue of Isaniwa Yukiya

    This statue is located near the Dogo Onsen Honkan public bathhouse in Dogoyunomachi, Matsuyama City. It depicts Isaniwa Yukiya, the first mayor of Dogoyunomachi, who renovated the decrepit Dogo Onsen Honkan at great cost during the Meiji period. Although its renovation faced fierce opposition at the time, today the Dogo Onsen Honkan is the symbol of this hot spring district.

    A room within the Dogo Onsen Honkan Main Building public bathhouse in Dogoyunomachi, Matsuyama City. It is one of the private rooms located on the third floor and was used by author Soseki Natsume when he visited the Dogo Onsen Honkan Main Building. Photographs and busts of Soseki decorate the room and guests of the bathhouse can visit the room.

    One of the bathing areas within the Dogo Onsen Honkan Main Building public bathhouse in Dogoyunomachi, Matsuyama City. It was built in 1899 as an exclusive bathing area for the imperial family. It contains a front room, sitting area, throne room, and hidden area for guards. If you visit the room you can appreciate the fine details of the luxurious interior decor.

    These statues are located near Baishinji Station in Baishinji-machi, Matsuyama City. They depict the Akiyama brothers Yoshifuru and Saneyuki, whose military exploits were famously depicted in Shiba Ryotaro’s historical novel “Saka no Ue no Kumo.” Both of the statues look out over the Seto Inland Sea from the top of a hill.

    This historical building is located in Unomachi 3-Chome, Uwa-cho, Seiyo City. Built in 1770, it served as both the residence and shop of the Suemitsu family, who were involved in businesses including sake brewing and soy sauce production. Designated by the city as a Tangible Cultural Asset, the building is currently opened to public on the first Sunday of each month.

Stretched across the northwest corner of Shikoku island, Ehime is a nature-rich prefecture boasting beautiful coastlines and a rural center where mountains play host to 26 of the Buddhist temples that make up the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Matsuyama is home to an original post-feudal castle as well as Dogo Onsen, one of the country’s oldest natural hot springs. The northern city of Imabari marks the entrance to the Shimano Kaido, a road that crosses six spectacular bridges and several islands, forming a route between Shikoku and mainland Honshu.
