This is a public bathhouse of the historical Dogo Onsen. The three-tiered wooden building has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It sprung to fame after it was mentioned in Natsume Soseki’s novel, Botchan. The dark interior with its pillars, beams and wooden lockers oozes with antiquated charm. The Honkan has two indoor baths, the Kami no Yu and the Tama no Yu, where visitors can relax and enjoy a pleasant soak. At extra charge guests can use the resting room complete with a hired yukata and some tea and cake. The nearest station is Dogo Onsen Station.

Not something for me personally, but my wife assures me there is something special about the water here. She took a bath, reasonably price and time limited (so I didnt have to wait around until she...

A hot spring bathhouse in Dogoyunomachi, Matsuyama City. This day-trip bathhouse was built for the opening of the 1953 National Athletic Meet. Come relax in baths fed by hot spring cisterns from a free-flowing spring that can't be had anywhere but Dogo Onsen.

This is a very satisfactory bath though not up to the level of the honkan. In any other place, this would be a premium bath. However, do note that you must bring or buy soap and shampoo (towels are...

The third of the Dogo Onsen bathhouses after Dogo Onsen Tsubaki-no-Yu. The bathhouse is built to encapsulate the concept of Asuka period architecture including ornamental ridge end rooftiles resembling historical structures such as Nara's Todaiji temple and a vivid outward appearance of contrasting red and white to draw the eye. Along with the large indoor public baths decorated with Tobe-ware walls they also have an outdoor bath unlike the Honkan Main Building and you can relax in the high-quality spring water to your heart's content.

Come make a day trip or stay overnight at the Higashidogo Hot-Spring Village, this hot-spring bath house, just 12-minutes from the main Dogo-Onsen bath house. The baths are fed by a simple alkaline hot spring with an unusual viscosity. It's great for the skin and can help with nerve pain or stiff shoulders. The spring water is also filtered through three round stone filters resulting in a drinkable mineral water that lets you feel the effect of the spring water throughout the body. There are also a variety of glamorous food options including cheese with braised short ribs, motsu-nabe (offal hot-pot stew), a meal served on a wooden boat, and traditional afternoon tea.

The Shikoku Matsuyama Dogo Onsen hotel is a long-established hot springs hotel located approximately three minutes’ walk from Dogo Onsen Station (on the Iyotetsu Jonan Line tram line). The hotel traces its origins back to a hot springs inn that was opened during the Kan’ei era (1624–1644), and which was famous for being patronized by leading literary figures connected with Matsuyama. Day visitors are welcome to use the hot springs facilities. The cypress-wood bath, where bathers can relax while enjoying the marvelous scent of Hinoki (cypress wood), and the two granite bathtubs (made using the Iyo region’s famous Oshima granite) are open to male bathers at certain times of day and female bathers at other times. Saunas and open-air baths are also available.

Come enjoy the renowned free flowing natural hot-spring of Okudogo Onsen which is said to be great for the skin. It's an alkaline simple sulfur hot spring that makes the skin soft to the touch and is said to help with nerve pain, muscle soreness, recovering from exhaustion, and chronic women's diseases. Some of the appeal is the multitude of plans such as the Family Plan, perfect for those with children looking for peace of mind, or the Luxury Plan, which lets you enjoy a stay one rank higher than the best. From one of the best large open-air baths in west Japan you'll get an amazing 360-degree view of beautiful mountain scenery.

This famous hot-spring was once blessed by a visit from the 37th monarch of Japan, Empress Saimei. The baths have over 1,400 years of history and is fed by its own private spring, famous for resulting in outstandingly beautiful skin. The sodium - chloride - hydrogen carbonate cold mineral spring, is transparent but when mineral deposits appear it can have a white cloudy appearance. Day trips are the norm but there are ten limited lodgings available as well. Many pilgrims visiting 88 sacred places on the Shikoku Pilgrimage stop in after visiting Yokomine-ji Temple, the 60th temple, because of the difficulty of the route.

Just five minutes from the JR Uchiko Station by car, the conception of this hotel located in Uchiko Town is very modern, yet preserves the Japanese essence. The restaurant preparing delicately flavored French cuisine from local produce and the hot spring bathing, available also to day visitors, is very popular. The open-air bath that channels the spring water directly, and the indoor bath are both available for guests.

Shikoku's westernmost hot-spring, located on the Sadamisaki Peninsula, Japan's narrowest peninsula. This hot spring is in a quiet neighborhood on the Uwa Sea side via the Sadamisaki Melody Line and while you can stop in for a bath you can also easily spend the night and fully relax. This high quality natural hot-spring is a weak alkaline hypotonic spring that easily penetrates the body and is good for your skin. It has beneficial effects such as helping with nerve pain and muscle soreness as well as helping recover from exhaustion and promoting general health. With a restaurant serving the seasonal flavors of Sadamisaki as well as a shop selling local specialties this is a fun spot to take a break while driving.

It is said that both the 34th monarch of Japan, Emperor Jomei, and the 37th monarch of Japan, Empress Saimei both bathed in this famous ancient hot-spring. This hypotonic alkaline cold mineral spring is said to be good for the skin, flushing away skin secretions and fat buildups. As it doesn't cause dizziness after extended use it's known as a family bath and it's safe for everyone from children to the elderly to bathe. It's open for day trips but you'll have to remember to bring your own soap and shampoo as they are not provided.

This bath house is marked by its easy access, being just a one-minute walk from JR Matsuyama Station. It's across the intersection from the front of the station on the first floor of the Kisuke BOX Mall main building. It has a variety of baths including western Japan's largest carbonated bath and a cloudy dozing bath where you can relax and get comfortable in a half body bath, befitting a modern natural hot-spring resort. The spring water in the carbonated bath and Shigaraki pottery tubs is chloride spring water which greatly aids in the retention of heat. Most of the baths are fed by the free flowing Tsubaki-no-yu spring, a simple alkaline spring that's slightly radioactive. The high alkalinity has a great effect on your skin.

Morinokuni Poppo Onsen is one of Japan’s more unusual natural hot spring spas as its part of JR Matsumaru Station. With views of the Hirose River from the free foot bath on the second floor, it’s highly popular with tourists as they can access it directly from the train platform. There are two indoor baths, the wooden Meiji-no-Yu and stone Nametoko-no-Yu. It’s a day spa where the bathing areas periodically rotate between men’s and women’s use. Both have a sauna and an outdoor bath. The lobby features local specialty products from Matsuno, and they sell items like ice cream and milk. It’s a good place to take a rest after your bath.
