This confectionery opened in 1931 in Okaido, Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, and its most well-known product is its famous “Roken manto” sweet buns. They were originally created at the Institute for Labor Science in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture by adapting sweet buns from China to Japanese tastes, and in Matsuyama during the early Showa period, they were produced and sold to raise money for night school expenses as well as for meals. Their steamed bread has garnered many fans over the years for its simple taste, soft texture, and mild sweetness created using the same yeast that was being used when the store opened. There are many other varieties as well, such as black soybean, pinto bean, mugwort, strained bean paste, and more, and frozen sets are sold as well. Note: Currently closed.

This café serves sweet known as ohigiri-san by the locals. Batter is poured into a round metal mold then filled with red bean jam and baked – this sweet is usually called obanyaki in Japanese. The name comes from the fact that the sweets are sold beside the Higiri Jizo statue in Matsuyama; it is more well-known than obanyaki in Matsuyama. There are various flavors including the classic red bean jam, white bean jam flavored with yuzu and cream as well as limited availability seasonal flavors. The café also has a mail-order service which is popular for its crème brûlée with custard cream and caramel.

Approximately three minutes from Dogo Onsen Station. This long-standing homemade tart shop located on the shopping district of Dogo Onsen was established in 1933. These tarts are made by baking a sponge cake on a skillet, brushing on homemade special red bean paste by hand, and rolling each one at a time. The “Chotokusen Tart 70” celebrates their anniversary, and the castella and sweet bean jelly are all good as gifts. Enjoy the tarts and green tea set in the inner part of the eat-in area.

Right in front of the police station sits a Japanese confectioner, that deals with “ichi-roku tarts” —one of a Matsuyama souvenir. Renovated in 1995, this pure-Japanese-style shop is built in the sukiya-zukuri style and features a large parking lot—available for car travelers. The ichi-roku tart is like a roll-cake, with red bean jam wrapped in delicate sponge cake, offering a fresh taste with a hint of citron aroma amid the sweetness. The carefully crafted ichi-roku tart is a famous traditional Shikoku sweet. You can purchase them as gifts in a box, or as an assortment.

    Ehime Pref. Imabarishi Nakabamachou 1-1-21
Facing Imabari Harbor, Isshodo is a Japanese-style confectionary founded in 1790. Its most famous product, Keiran Manju (egg buns) is still one of the most famous confections in Ehime Prefecture. In the Edo period, Ote Manju (creamy bean paste buns) were popular in the area around Imabari Castle, and it is said that Keiran Manju were invented by the first owner of Isshodo, who used eggs instead of water when he kneaded the dough. Baked Keiran Manju are one of the products available only at this shop. However, Isshodo sells sweets other than Manju, including baked goods such as tarts and Castella cake. All of these are extremely popular souvenirs.

Its about a 22 walk from JR Yawatahama, but the bread is so worth it! Buttery bliss, freshly baked shoyu bread. It is also very near the air raid shelter (about 5 mins) and the Fuji store complex...

Ehime Areas

around-area-map

Stretched across the northwest corner of Shikoku island, Ehime is a nature-rich prefecture boasting beautiful coastlines and a rural center where mountains play host to 26 of the Buddhist temples that make up the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Matsuyama is home to an original post-feudal castle as well as Dogo Onsen, one of the country’s oldest natural hot springs. The northern city of Imabari marks the entrance to the Shimano Kaido, a road that crosses six spectacular bridges and several islands, forming a route between Shikoku and mainland Honshu.
