A chosa is a festival float used to carry taiko drums, and such taiko drum floats, which are used in the Chosa Festival events held throughout the city in October, are stored and displayed in this museum. Over 100 chosa exist in the city, and during the festival they create a stunning spectacle as they are gallantly paraded through the streets. The museum also introduces the history of chosa and their decorations, and visitors can experience the thrill of the festival even when it is not being held. Be sure not to miss the area where visitors can strike a full-sized taiko drum, as well as the area where visitors can try shouldering a chosa just like they are carried during the festival.

    Kagawa Nakatado-gun Tadotsucho Kachu 1-6
This is a museum built to commemorate the centennial of the founding of Tadotsu Township. It displays and preserves many of the cultural artifacts and documents pertaining to the growth and development of Tadotsu, which lies on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea. This area flourished during the Meiji era after the restoration and through the early Showa era because of the railroad industry. It thrived as one of the few towns pioneering towards the modernization of Kagawa because its harbor was the port of call for many western-route trade ships. This archival museum houses many documents and artifacts describing the history and growth of the area, including the fact that it was here that the first weather station and electric light company was established in all of Shikoku Island. It was known as the birthplace of modernization for Shikoku.

    Kagawa Zentsuji-shi Zentsujicho 6-1-4
This is a local folk museum, about a three-minute walk from the great red gate to the Zentsuji Temple. Exhibited here are around 1000 historical, and anthropological artifacts that are related to around 800 archaeological items unearthed from within Zentsuji. These artifacts were formerly housed in the historic Zentsuji City Kaikosha, military club; an Important Cultural Property built in 1877. However, in 2005 they were moved here, the Akamonsuji, to conserve and repair said property as an important cultural property. Among the archaeological findings from the Paleolithic age to the civil war ear are many invaluable items important to the study of Japan's history.

Kagawa Areas

around-area-map

Japan’s smallest prefecture, Kagawa, may take up just a small corner of Shikoku, but it has grown increasingly popular with the recognition of Naoshima, its "art island" in the Seto Inland Sea between Shikoku and Honshu. Just a stone’s throw from the islands, mainland Kagawa’s prefectural capital, Takamatsu, holds history in its castle ruins and its pride and joy, Ritsurin Garden, is known as one of the country’s best gardens.
