  • The Peeing Boy of Iya Gorge

    This statue of a peeing boy was based on anecdotes about local children and travelers who tested their bravery here by peeing off the edge of the 200-meter cliff above the Iya River. Created in 1968 by Tokushima sculptor Ryoko Kawasaki, the statue stands on a rock in Nana Magari (seven curves), said to be the hardest part of the Iya Kaido Highway.

    This mountain settlement is lined with around 70 homes built from the mid-Edo period to the early Showa period on a steep slope with an elevation difference of 390 meters. In 2005, it was designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The Iya region has many Heike no Ochudo legends about members of the Taira Clan who survived and retreated to remote regions after the Taira Clan was defeated in the Genpei War.

    "Tsubakidomari Town in Anan City was the home of the ""Awa Suigun"" led by the Mori Clan, which was active from the Warring States Period to the Edo Period. Today, traces of the old days can be seen in the monument next to Tsubakidomari Elementary School, the ruins of stonewalls, and the winding road."
