A museum dedicated to Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, which prospered as a castle town in the ancient Choshu Domain and where many historic buildings from that time still stand. The museum was built to serve as the central facility of the Hagi Machiju Museum project, which aims to turn the entire neighborhood into a giant museum. The museum contains some 190 thousand items connected to Hagi, including historical materials and works of art. There’s a section of the museum which presents historic figures affiliated with Hagi, such as Takasugi Shinsaku and Yoshida Shoin, a gallery where visitors can come in contact with the culture and natural environment of Hagi, and more. Four times a year, the museum holds special exhibits.

A nice museum about the area. If you dont speak Japanese you can still enjoy it quitte a bit. The staff was nice.

The Hagi Uragami Museum is a museum in Hagi City that is dedicated to Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, East Asian ceramics and ceramic art. The Museum was opened in 1996 to house a collection of items donated by businessman Uragami Toshiro (who was born in Hagi); it was awarded two stars in the Michelin Green Guide. There is a tearoom where visitors can enjoy drinking green tea out of Hagi-ware teacups, which is popular as a place to relax while enjoying viewing art at the Museum.

Nice place, nice staff. Be careful though, they say they show the whole collection of Hokusai prints, when in reality, its just one from time to time.

This park spreads along the west side of Hagi Castle ruins. The park has monuments representing Past-Present-Future, as well as playground equipment, and benches. Many of the sculptures with very skillful shapes sculptures were done by 24 artists from eight countries who participated in the 1981 International Sculpture Symposium here. The greenery-embraced grounds have become a popular place for rest and peaceful contemplation with locals, and in spring the blooming azaleas create a beautiful contrast with the lush greenery for a famous local sight.

    Yamaguchi Pref. Hagishi Horiuchi 1-1
Hagi Castle (also known as Shizuki Castle) was built by Mori Terumoto in 1604. After the castle was demolished, Shizuki Park was built in part of what had previously been the Honmaru (central bailey) of the castle. Part of the castle’s stone wall and defensive ditch survive, and the site has been designated as a National Historic Site. Within the Park, there are many historic remains that remind visitors that a castle once stood here, including the ruins of the castle’s Tenshu-kaku (central tower) and the Hananoe teahouse (the Nashiba family teahouse), and the former Fukuhara Family Sho-in (Fukuhara Academy), etc. The remains of the Tenshu-kaku walls are illuminated at night, making a truly beautiful sight. Shizuki Park is a famous spot for viewing cherry-blossom, attracting many visitors during the cherry blossom season in spring. Within the park there is a single specimen of the Midori Yoshino variety of cherry tree, which has been designated by Yamaguchi Prefectural Government as a Prefectural Natural Monument; its beautiful white petals make this a very special tree.

"This beach is located in Kita-Nagato Kaigan Quasi-National Park. The coast with quiet waves, white sand and green pine trees has been chosen as one of Best Beach 100 of Japan, and the seawater there is distinctively clear and beautiful. You can see Mt. Shizuki, a nationally-designated Natural Monument that towers over the peninsula, and many islands including offshore Oshima Island and Ainoshima Island from the sandy beach, and it is also famous as a spot with magnificent views. In addition, Kikugahama Beach was also called ""Abu no Matsubara"" in the ""Kin'yo Wakushu"" (a Japanese imperial anthology). There are beach houses and many street vendors during the beach season, making it suitable for families spending time on the beach."

This art museum is inside a renovated earthen-walled warehouse style home once owned by the Kumaya family, who prospered as royal purveyors for the Hagi domain. Said to have been built in 1768, four structures comprising the main hall, a separate room, the main warehouse, and the treasury, are all nationally designated Important Cultural Properties. There are about 3,000 works of art on display from the collection gathered by the Kumaya family head, and among them is a piano donated by famed German doctor Siebold, who was friends with the fourth generation family head Goemon Yoshikazu. The British-made piano is the oldest remaining in Japan.

This square is located in Hagi Castle Town. It stands near the birthplace of Takasugi Shinsaku, a loyalist of the late Edo period, and features a bronze statue of his dignified figure with a topknot, wearing haori and hakama (Japanese male formal attire) with two swords in his sash, as he would have appeared in his twenties when he was studying at the Meirinkan domain school and Shokason-juku Academy. The statue stands 180 centimeters tall, and with the base is over three meters in the air, facing the direction of his birthplace and Hagi Castle. The square also holds trees such as Hagi's specialty summer oranges, as well as Shinsaku's beloved plum blossom trees. Since its construction in 2010, it has drawn growing crowds of history fans.
  • Hagi Christian Martyrs Memorial Park
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Yamaguchi Hagi-shi Horiuchi
This memorial park is near the Hagi Castle ruins, and holds a monument to Christian martyrs built by French missionary Amatus Villion, as well as the graves of Christians from Urakami village in Nagasaki exiled to Hagi in 1868. This park is also a testament to the tragedy of the Gorota-ishi incident, which occurred during the building of Hagi Castle. Rumors that the Gorota-ishi (stones for the castle's bulwarks) were being stolen resulted in open conflict involving Kumagai Motonao and Amano Motonobu, and the construction of the stone walls was delayed by more than two months. Claiming that the trouble of overshoot was caused by Kumagai and Amano, Mori Terumoto, one of the Council of Five Elders appointed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, attacked them and slew all eleven members of their families. Rumors later spread that the two killed were hidden Christians, thus excusing their deaths.

Yamaguchi Areas

around-area-map

Heading west along Japan’s largest island, Honshu, the very last prefecture you’ll reach is Yamaguchi, separated from Kyushu by a small strip of water known as the Kanmon Straits, which the far-reaching harbor city Shimonoseki looks over. With water at every turn, the seafood of Yamaguchi is an indisputable highlight, and we’re not talking just the usual fish dishes - the notorious fugu, or puffer fish, is a Japanese delicacy that was discovered in Yamaguchi prefecture, making it the best place to try it out.
