This memorial hall has exhibits connected to the kaiten, a torpedo shaped special weapon, built in the remains of barracks once used by former kaiten trainees and staff. Stone monuments are lined up at the entrance, and inside panels introduce kaiten history, and lives of those involved in it. There are around 1,000 items connected to the staff in the collection. There are also dioramas recreating the base, and films of the staff speaking at the time.

Having lived in Yamaguchi prefecture many years ago, I had heard of the museum but never thought to go there. Finally 30 years later, for a ALT 30 year reunion, we took the ferry to spend time there...

"An ancient Buddhist temple founded in the year 1006. Since long ago faithful from all over the country have believed in it as the ""Bodhisattva of the Sea."" The inner part of the temple grounds has a dry landscape garden with skillfully harmonized trees and stones which is said to have been created by Sesshu. It's renowned because it was made during the period when dry landscape garden construction began in earnest. It has been designated as a prefectural Place of Scenic Beauty. In 1865 it served as the headquarters for the Choshu Domain troops known as the South Kihei Army as the Tokugawa period drew to a close; it's famous for being the place where about 400 soldiers met their ends."

    Yamaguchi Hikari-shi Tsukari 2250-1
A museum displaying personal items of Japan's first Prime Minister, Hirobumi Ito. You can learn about Japan from the end of the Edo period to the end of the Meiji period in a building featuring Meiji brick construction. The steel-framed, one-story structure with a floor area of 534.36 square meters is located between Hirobumi Ito's birthplace and former residence, providing a symbolic connection between his childhood and later life. The exhibition room displays his uniform, the first 1,000 yen note with his portrait (issued in 1963), and furniture that he used at his villa in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture.

    Yamaguchi Shunan-shi Nagaho 1075-1
This famous Soto sect temple was established in 1429. Morimasa, the fifth generation of the Sue clan, established this temple as a family temple and enshrined the Sue clan, who were vassals of the Ouchi clan in the Muromachi period (1336-1573). The location of Morimasa's tomb is no longer known, but there are many other memorial sites, such as the Sue clan's Japanese stone pagoda and five-ringed pagoda. The Nembutsu Odori, a traditional performing art handed down in the temple, was once danced as a memorial service to the Sue clan and eventually changed into a dance to pray for rain and was passed down as an intangible folk cultural property of the prefecture. The city has a special-order tea kettle, an important cultural property designated by the city, and the history of the area is being passed down to the present day.

This place totally rocks. I can recommend Ryumonji to anyone. Long time practitioner or just curious. Beautiful setting and a nice atmosphere.

    Yamaguchi Kumage-gun Kaminosekicho Murotsu 868-1
A Western-style wooden building completed in 1879 in Murotsu, a port town that prospered as a key hub for marine transport since the days of old. The four-story giyofu-style wooden structure is rare in Japan, and it's one of the oldest Western-style buildings in the prefecture. The Meiji Reformation patriot Ogata Kenkuro used it for hosting guests and as lodging. The exterior and interior are both elaborate, with plaster sculptures of Chinese lions and peonies on the third-floor walls. Guardhouses were lookouts established by the Hagi Domain at strategic points along the border and other points on the coast and inland during the Edo period. The onigawara roof ornamentation has the Hagi Mori family crest. The facility was used to monitor passers-by and ships and collect shipping taxes. Built by the fourth lord of the Nagashima clan in 1632, it was relocated to Kaminoseki in 1711 as a port of call for Korean envoys and a matter of convenience. The valuable building is the only guardhouse left in the prefecture. It was relocated in 1996 and restored to its original form.

    Yamaguchi Hikari-shi Murozumi 5-6-5
"A local museum established for the 50th anniversary of the municipality as one of its ""hometown creation"" projects. It consists of a main building and an annex restored by the Isobe family who owned a soy sauce shop under the name ""Isotami (later Isoya)"" from the Edo period to the mid-1950s. The Isobe Honke building is a unique merchant house structure colloquially called an unagi no nedoko (eel bed). The long two-story wooden building with narrow frontage recalls the prosperity of the port town of Murozumi. Exhibits on the kitamaebune ships that called at Murozumi during the Edo period, displays of equipment used for soy sauce brewing, and other displays let you learn about the lifestyles and culture of those days."

Yamaguchi Areas

around-area-map

Heading west along Japan’s largest island, Honshu, the very last prefecture you’ll reach is Yamaguchi, separated from Kyushu by a small strip of water known as the Kanmon Straits, which the far-reaching harbor city Shimonoseki looks over. With water at every turn, the seafood of Yamaguchi is an indisputable highlight, and we’re not talking just the usual fish dishes - the notorious fugu, or puffer fish, is a Japanese delicacy that was discovered in Yamaguchi prefecture, making it the best place to try it out.
