Yamaguchi Shimonoseki-shi Amidaijicho 3-14

A memorial hall in Amidaiji-cho, Shimonoseki City. It's dedicated to Yoshie Fujiwara, the world-renowned singer from Shimonoseki. Reservations are required when visiting. The building was constructed as the home for the son of the president of Holme Ringer & Co., a British trading company. It was later the official residence of the British consul.

世界的なオペラ歌手であった藤原義江の記念館。日清講和会議が開かれた春帆楼から山沿いに続く李鴻章道の上に建っています。かつて英国系商社ホーム・リンガー商会の社長令息の住宅でシンプルな外観の建物です。下関が生んだダンディー歌手の歌声が館内に流れています。

Yamaguchi Hikari-shi Murozumi 8-6-1

"An ancient Buddhist temple founded in the year 1006. Since long ago faithful from all over the country have believed in it as the ""Bodhisattva of the Sea."" The inner part of the temple grounds has a dry landscape garden with skillfully harmonized trees and stones which is said to have been created by Sesshu. It's renowned because it was made during the period when dry landscape garden construction began in earnest. It has been designated as a prefectural Place of Scenic Beauty. In 1865 it served as the headquarters for the Choshu Domain troops known as the South Kihei Army as the Tokugawa period drew to a close; it's famous for being the place where about 400 soldiers met their ends."

Yamaguchi Hikari-shi Tsukari 2250-1

A museum displaying personal items of Japan's first Prime Minister, Hirobumi Ito. You can learn about Japan from the end of the Edo period to the end of the Meiji period in a building featuring Meiji brick construction. The steel-framed, one-story structure with a floor area of 534.36 square meters is located between Hirobumi Ito's birthplace and former residence, providing a symbolic connection between his childhood and later life. The exhibition room displays his uniform, the first 1,000 yen note with his portrait (issued in 1963), and furniture that he used at his villa in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture.

当地出身の伊藤博文公を記念する公園。洋風の旧別邸、茅葺の生家、ゆかりの品や功績を説明する記念館、山口県出身の総理大臣が立てた顕彰碑、そして「旧千円札の顔出し写真撮影スポット」等があった。記念館だけは有料だが、それ以外は無料だった。駐車場は道路の向かいにあった。休日に行ったら、駐車場はそこそこ混んでいた。駐車場のとなりにカフェとトイレがあった。ちょっと立ち寄って休憩するには良いスポットだった。

Yamaguchi Pref. Yamaguchishi Kasugachou 5-1

This museum educates visitors on the history, culture and folklore of Yamaguchi City. It preserves and exhibits valuable materials and documents. Apart from the regular displays, it also runs special exhibits related to Yamaguchi. The museum has an Ancient Manuscript Library, and during summer vacation they hold lessons for children.

山口駅から周辺を散策にて寄りました。人は少なく、ゆっくりと観ることができました。「信仰でたどる江戸時代」と言う企画展が開催されていました。関西方面へ旅行した道中記の内容が展示していて、有名な神社などを行き、近くで食事したなどが書いてあり、昔の旅行も今と変わらないと思いした○

Yamaguchi Hagi-shi Horiuchi 502-6

This museum is near the entrance to the Hagi Castle ruins. Its exhibits include several hundred pieces of historically important pottery, including works from official Hagi Domain kilns, early Edo period Matsumoto Kiln pieces, and works from the early Sannose Kiln. Hagi-yaki pottery originated when Korean potters were brought to Hagi after Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasion of the Korean Peninsula, and it prospered as an official service for the lords of the Hagi Domain. This museum displays famous pieces that were found sleeping in the old homes of Hagi and inherited from ancestors, and offers a chance to learn about both Hagi-yaki pottery and local history.

萩城跡の駐車場から入口までのあいだにあり、帰りに立ち寄りました。萩焼自体普段あまり目にすることがないので、ここで初めて萩焼がどんなものか見ることになりました。落ち着いた焼き物で、ここに置いてあるものは値段がはるものが中心でした。

Yamaguchi Pref. Hagishi Tsubaki Higashi Eikyu mountain 426-1

This museum is located in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and exhibits pottery wares of the famed Hagi-yaki potter Taibi Yoshika and local ceramic artists. In addition, watercolor paintings, pottery tools and raw materials, etc. are displayed. Events such as Hagi-yaki pottery experience programs, to promote culture, are also held.

吉賀大眉記念館は、その名の通り萩焼の名陶芸家吉賀大眉さんや萩にゆかりのある作品を収集した美術館で、東萩駅より自動車で5分ほどの場所にあります。上品な特徴を持つような萩焼の美しさを堪能することができて、特に花器や古来の作品で出土されたような作品なんか、歴史の重みを感じます。

This is a residence built in 1903 by Mori Mototoshi, who was the 14th generation head of the Mori family. Some rooms have been left as they were at that time as a result of also being used as lodgings for Emperor Meiji. You can command a view of three types of garden from the stately main wing of this house which is an example of a samurai residence structure: the three types of garden are the “Chisen Kaiyushiki” (strolling pond) garden, the “Shoin” (lit. drawing room) garden and a traditional Japanese dry landscape garden. This place is also well known as a famous spot for viewing of autumn leaves.

庭の緑が綺麗です。邸内はいくつも部屋があって、古い鴨居や木の襖など珍しい作りとなってます。お金を払えば抹茶なども頂けます。着物も無料で来て写真撮影も出来ます。この暑い季節に無料のお茶が暑いのは勘弁。

Yamaguchi Ube-shi Nishikiwa

A Jizo Bodhisattva statue in Kamikatakura Nishikiwa, Ube City. It is said that a visit there provides benefits such as recovery from illness; wafting the smoke from incense burned in offering on the affected part of the body is said to produce the best results. In addition to regular festivals on the 24th of each month, special festivals are held in January, April, and August.

鳥居のそばに石碑がありましたが良く読めません。ここは海運業で栄えた浜崎町エリア、住吉神社というと海事の神様になるのでそのつながりでしょうか。隣接する保育園の園児たちが境内を元気よく走り回っていました。

隣が民俗学者の宮本常一の記念館です。これは小学校の体育館のようなイメージですが、星野哲郎の記念館は、モダンな美術館のイメージですね。皆が知っている歌をたくさん作っていますので、周防大島に行ったらぜひ尋ねたい場所です。

"This museum is next to the Ayaragigo ruins. It displays about 500 pieces from the Yayoi and Kofun periods excavated from below Shimonoseki Castle. They have recreated life-size dioramas of ""storage pits"" and display materials connected to excavation and archaeology in the Regional Education Room. They also run tours and excursions around the Ayaragigo ruins. The grounds outside are built as a ruin park, with restored dugout shelters and kofun burial mounds for viewing."

前日からの萩観光を終え、日本海側を下関経由で北九州空港にレンタカーで戻る途中で見学しました。石器や土器が陳列されているだけの資料館が多い分野ですが、ここは工夫した明るい展示で楽しめました。

This shrine stands next to Noda Shrine, which is known to have one of the best Noh theaters in Japan. It is dedicated to Motonari Mori, who elevated the Mori clan to one of the greatest feudal lords of western Japan during the Age of Warring States. When Motonari's grandson, Terumoto, moved his castle to Hagi after his forced relocation, the spirit of Motonari was enshrined in Kasuga Shrine. The shrine was moved to Yamaguchi in the Meiji period (1868-1912), and the shrine was built and relocated at its present location. The name Toyosaka was bestowed by the Imperial Court. In 1882, it became an Imperial Shrine of Special Status, enshrining those who had made special contributions to the nation.

Yamaguchi Shunan-shi Nagaho 1075-1

This famous Soto sect temple was established in 1429. Morimasa, the fifth generation of the Sue clan, established this temple as a family temple and enshrined the Sue clan, who were vassals of the Ouchi clan in the Muromachi period (1336-1573). The location of Morimasa's tomb is no longer known, but there are many other memorial sites, such as the Sue clan's Japanese stone pagoda and five-ringed pagoda. The Nembutsu Odori, a traditional performing art handed down in the temple, was once danced as a memorial service to the Sue clan and eventually changed into a dance to pray for rain and was passed down as an intangible folk cultural property of the prefecture. The city has a special-order tea kettle, an important cultural property designated by the city, and the history of the area is being passed down to the present day.

This place totally rocks. I can recommend Ryumonji to anyone. Long time practitioner or just curious. Beautiful setting and a nice atmosphere.

The Shoin Shrine in Hagi City is dedicated to Yoshida Shoin, a famous educator active in the Bakumatsu era (in the mid-19th century). The Shrine originated as a Hokora (small shrine) set up in Yoshida’s family home in 1890; the current Shrine building was completed in 1955. Yoshida Shoin is widely revered as a deity of learning, and many students with upcoming examinations visit the Shrine for the Hatsumode (the first visit to a shrine in the New Year) to pray for successful examination results.

This museum is located a ten-minute drive from the Ogori Interchange on the Chugoku Expressway. With a focus on materials related to Santoka Taneda, a wandering haiku poet with a deep connection to Ogori, it introduces the history of Ogori and the famous people and artists who were born there. It is a great place to learn about life and history in those days, with a restored area on the second floor based on an ordinary farmhouse in the late Edo period (1603-1868). It also has a rental gallery that can be used as a venue for special exhibitions and the presentation of artistic and cultural works by local residents.

"There is a legend that Lady Yang, one of the three most beautiful women in the world, got on a small boat and drifted to this temple after escaping from disaster. On the grounds overlooking Yuya Bay in the inner sea, the Five Ring Pagoda, which is said to be the Tomb of Lady Yang"" and the two principal object of worship statues of Buddha (a standing image of Amitabha Buddha and a standing image of Shakyamuni Buddha) enshrined to pray for the repose of Lady Yang's soul are enshrined. The plum trees bloom in March and the yokihi-zakura cherry blossoms in April each year, and the temple is said to be for the protection of women, safe delivery, fertility and marriage. Yuya Bay, which can be seen from the temple, is also known as a spot for touring and dates because of the beautiful sunset."

山口油谷湾の小さな集落に楊貴妃のお墓と伝承されるスポットがあります。その謂われは綿々と心打たれるもので、なるほどこれが楊貴妃のお墓かもと思わせるモノがあります。この伝承の中でこのお寺さんも改名したそうです。平日であったこともあり、訪れていたのは私一人。散歩に来ていた地元の方からお寺の説明を聞かせて頂きました。中華風の建物や大理石の楊貴妃像など異国情緒も目を引きました。

A museum located in 3 Chome, Iwakuni, Iwakuni City. It's housed in the Iwakuni Gakko Kosha; built in 1870 by the second lord of Iwakuni, Tsunetake Kikkawa, it's a prefectural Tangible Cultural Property. The museum exhibits educational materials and items from the region. Also exhibited are materials related to Ichisuke Fujioka; an Iwakuni Gakko graduate, he was the founder of Tokyo Electric Power Company, the first electric company in Japan.

This is the visitor's center for Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park. It is adjacent Taishodo cavern, a limestone cavern full of variation, and offers an introduction to the geology, history and nature of Akiyoshidai plateau. The hall holds various activity areas to engage all five senses, and you can enjoy learning about the natural environment, and ecological system of Akiyoshidai through images, models, and touch panel search machines. The Cave Interior Field offers cave simulation lessons on the creation of stalactites and stalagmites, as well as the flora and fauna in the cave.
